It was an initial success. But now that anyone can be in the program, it has lead to the creation of mini-suburban slums. If a few houses in ritzy Myers Park were subdivided into Section 8 apartments, within twenty years, the entire area would be a giant slum. What was once hailed as a solution to high-rise urban blight, is now rearing its ugly head in what used to be nice middle-class areas. Another "bright idea" with poorly thought-out consequences. The South Bronx and the denizens of "The Wire" along with MS-13 coming to a run-down subdivision (read: "Rent to Own" & "Section 8 Welcome") near you!
And, imagine what we, as a society could accomplish if we cut some of these BS social programs!! Welfare to work is a crock, if they end right back up there. Continued use of vouchers and handouts does nothing more than create an entire class who have an overwhelming sense of entitlement. Unfortunately, there seems to be a shift in the politics of this country, such that handouts are not being eliminated, but steadily increased.

Thank you, by the way, for originally posting the Atlantic Monthly article. It eas very compelling information.

Indeed, the political climate in this country is shifting to leftist, socialist principles. Government is gaining more control in all aspects of our lives, and more and more people are feeding off the system. It's truly the only way to control a people, and that is to make them dependent on you.

Unfortunately, I really don't see any waves being made in Charlotte or our state to reverse the tide. Especially since Charlotte is a sanctuary city for illegal criminal invaders, the crisis will only get worse!

I was in a grant writing class, in fall 06, and I distinctly recall someone referring to Mecklenburg County as "an island of blue, in a sea of red". They said this with joy and happiness- like it was a good thing. Needless to say, my level of respect for that person changed drastically.

The Left and Right and their unending stupidity are both responsible for the current plethora of Section 8 people.

Every time I hear some right-wing anti-abortionist say "all life is precious", I want to vomit. There ought to be federal funding of abortion for welfare mothers. I'd rather pay $200 now, than have to pay $250,000 for their "little angels" and the prison cells that may well be holding them for life. I don't want to be paying a lifetime for them!!!

The Left loves to spend your money to fund these disasters, but I've yet to meet one that is looking to become that "urban pioneer" and move to "Hidden Valley" for something other than the ranch dressing. As soon as little Brandon and Ashley mention the "Crips and Bloods", you'd find them in the nearest "exurb" saying they moved for the schools! NIMBY personified!!

I understand your frustration for not wanting to pay for their mistakes, but abortion is not the answer and only adds to the moral corruption of our society. Then one asks, "Why don't we just tie the tubes and be done with it?" Well, then we're no better than China who actually limits the amount of children a family can have.

The only solution to the problem is to stop the madness that gets these people in the position to collect freebies in the first place. There'd be no incentive to make babies if it didn't mean more money for baby's mama. What should or could be a solution is if you can't afford the baby by ordinary means and have proven in the past that you can support a family (and I'm really only talking about the people that can't afford 2 babies much less 8), then these children are taken into state custody and offered up for adoption. Children should be no one's free ticket and the government must stop enabling it! But I digress and am likely just wasting my breath and my carpal tunnel laden fingers.

carolina_guy NJ tried limiting payments for welfare mothers that got pregnant after the second kid. It didn't work and later was declared unconstitutional. The problem with putting them up for adoption would be that you're still paying for them and in the long run, very few get adopted. I'd be more amenable to your thinking if Heaven opened up and dropped a "tax abatement check" into my hand!

Like I said in a thread a couple of weeks ago, these people buy the latest Nikes, biggest plasmas, gold and platinum jewelry (not to mention grillz-for those of you don't know that means bling bling on the teeth), Ipods, cell phones, and 20 inch rims on the hoopty ride, yet they show up weekly to the health department for free services, collect their gov't checks and food stamps, and get free housing all the same.

Now tell me how this system is working for the poor class besides letting them live a free life?
Stereotype much?

So it is satisfactory for someone to friviously spend their money while they receive supplemental income from other taxpayers.

Remember, the government has no money, they only receive income (to redistribute) by taxing those who earn.

Why don't you enlighten me with your thoughts instead of offering up empty phrases? There was no stereotyping whatsoever as I have already said not all people on welfare are like this. But I have seen these things with my own eyes, I have worked at the Mecklenburg County Health Department, so I know very well what I'm talking about.

And btw, I left out the fact that while that girl was lubing up her new tattoo, she mentioned she was also 4 months behind on her portion of day care that DSS doesn't cover. Care to discuss that????

Who are "these people" that you are talking about? And one girl, wow, what a sample size.

If it makes you feel all superior to bash poor people, by all means, continue. And if blaming all ills on liberals makes you feel better, so much the better.

BTW - I don't think that it's any secret that concentrated pockets of poverty increases crime. No one really cared when the crime was concentrated in projects and in the inner-city. But now that we're being "overrun by illegal criminal invaders", it's all of a sudden a crisis.
