Hi, I am arriving in Charlotte tomorrow from Philly. Can anyone recomment a "must" place to eat while I am in town. Somewhere off the beaten track maybe? Where the locals go? Thank-you I look forward to my stay in Charlotte!

Well...Price's Chicken Coup is probably the most hearlded place in the city. It is the Pat's of fried chicken.

Price's Chicken Coop

The other place to visit is the Penguin.

<< WELCOME to the PENGUIN Drive-In >> (http://www.penguindrivein.com/ - broken link)

Both are Charlotte institutions.

You don't want to do Price's, it's take out only.

Try Beef and Bottle, it's local and always rated one of the top places for steak each year and is very cheap.

They didn't say they needed a place to sit down.

Beef and Bottle is just a locally owned steakhouse...nothing great IMHO. Nothing you can't get in every city in the country. $25 for NY strip steak isn't cheap so not sure where "cheap" came from.

McDonald's across from SouthPark Mall.....a must.
It's two stories tall and has a piano on the first floor that magically plays music on its' own.

Seriously, try Del Frisco's in the Southpark area. Or McIntosh's Steak House on South Blvd. Good eating

Longhorn Steakhouse......just like Campbell Soup, ummmmmmm GOOD!! I love their steaks and wife loves their lobster. But, it can get crowded on weekends, as all the nice restaurants can/do.

Longhorn? Longhorn is no different in Charlotte as it is in any other city Don't get me wrong, its a great place to eat a steak but you can get that anywhere.

Kimbey doesn't give us much to go on, but I'd say for a taste of local atmosphere, hit the NODA area. Not that there's 5 star restaurants, but you get a 'local feel' in that area.

There is an extremly nice restuarant by LN, right off of the 77, that wife and I have been to that the atmosphere is TOTALLY cool! It is in a Marina area and has an outside patio area for dining next to the Marina/boats during the summer. The food......GREAT and yes, better than Longhorn....but more expensive and much, much more quieter. This restaurant is very romantic with "candle light" tables.
Sorry, just can not think of the name of this place, but sure would recommend it for a nice dinner out.

I post I can appreciate! I try to eat out 3-4 times per week, and must say, my Top 5 places that I would recommend...all non-chainy are:

1) Carpe Diem (Elizabeth Ave)
2) Nikko (South Blvd)
3) McIntosh Steakhouse (South Blvd)
4) Customshop (Elizabeth Ave)
5) 131 Main (Dilworth)

There's many more, but I hit a least one of those staples every week.
