I always see the suggestion to find a job before coming to Charlotte. If there are any people on this forum who found a job before moving, could you please tell me how you did it? I'm a computer programmer for an insurance company but I want to make my move spring of next year. I want some suggestions on how to find work from where I am now(Cleveland, Oh)without having to move to Charlotte first? I also have 2 other family members that want to move also. One has an Accounting degree and the other works in Claims for an Auto insurance company. Any suggestions for the job search would help?

I just recently found a job while out of state. I posted my resume on the normal career boards (Monster, Dice, Hotjobs, Careerbuilder etc.) I got a lot of hits. I had two versions of my resume going. One resume had the out of state address and one had a relative's address locally in Charlotte. I must admit that I did get more hits with the address with the local address.

This worked for me. I got a few job offers that came in I just started my new gig last week.

Good luck in your job search.

I did the direct approach when I was looking in Raleigh, I went to the employer site and downloaded my resume and had several calls and telephone interviews. However, when I changed to pursue living in Charlotte, I used a present contact whose company was in NC. This person was a partner in the NY office and had worked with my for years. He pushed my resume to NC and the rest is history.

My suggestion is to find the company you want to work and apply to them directly. Also post your resume on several sites. The more places you are visible the better. Your cousin should check the car insurance websites in NC to see whether they are hiring.
Here's a great website: Job Search | one search. all jobs. Indeed

A couple of my clients have come down and bought cell phones with a Charlotte area code and rented PO boxes. Not sure it helped, but I suspect it may have.

DH found a job without living here. They flew him out here 4 times for various job interviews (he used a headhunter).

We flew out once before that on our own $$ to check out the area first.

I would recommend that you state in your cover letter that you are not looking for any relocation assistance, and that you are ready to make the move as soon as employment is found. Also, if interested in the position you will need to be prepared to fly down. This approach worked for my wife although, she did have to fly down for a couple of interviews. She scheduled 3 on one trip and the next trip had two scheduled and was offered one position.
