Default railroad ties wanted

we are looking for new/used railroad ties to purchase. not the ones at home depot or lowes but the actual railroad ties. if anyone knows of such a place could you please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated. looking in the charlotte area, we are located in indian trail. thank you

Thanks I did see that post but people were mentioning Home Depot which carries the landscape timbers, not real railroad ties.

There is a huge pile on the side of Graham Street right after it goes over I-85 on the north side. It's been there for years...in fact, you can see it in the Google Earth/Maps satellite image:
Google Maps (on the west side of the tracks)

I don't know who owns them...probably the railroad company. I'd bet they want to get rid of them since they probably can't be used again for rail service.

One thing though..."real" railroad ties were soaked in creosole (I think that's the chemical) which is a carcinogen. Might want to take that into consideration with your intended use for the ties.

The ones that Home Depot or Lowes sell ARE real railrod ties - they have the holes punched in them where the "seat" for the rail was attached, ...... and sometimes still have the seat attached!

I don't think the railroad will sell you any. It's soak with chemicals like previous poster mention. Will it be against the law?
