Crime in Union vs Meck-quick question
Hi Everybody,
I'm moving to an upscale subdivision called Providence Downs (PD) in Union Cty in 2 weeks. My father-in-law who lives only a mile from there & is a sargeant who retired 5 years ago, says that the crime is in Meck not Union. Would this hold true for PD? If it is true, just how far from Meck do you need to be to avoid most of the residential crime? I'm not sure if I should get an alarm system or not & would really appreciate your advice.

I feel I am in a good area (Fort Mill) and went with an alarm system anyways. As the area grows, the crime might come into other areas. It is a good peace of mind.

I live clear up in the Mallard Creek area and I feel totally safe, we do have two dogs that are our alarm system. I think sometimes the media tends to hype things up in the Charlotte/Mecklenburg area more than surrounding counties.

Crime can happen anywhere, we got an alarm anyway just to be on the safe side. Its better to be overprotected than not protected at all.

A county line doesn't stop crime. I live right before the line in south charlotte and most all my friends live right across the line in a few diff. neighborhoods and we all have the same issues.

I am in a neighborhood a mile down the street from you and have installed an alarm system. Not to much money for the peace of mind imo.

UC has been relatively lucky. However we are seeing crime on the upswing. Most of these types of crimes are breaking and entering and breaking into cars. Copper thieves are all over as well. There's typcially only 12 -15 deputies patrolling the county at any given time, so repsonse times to calls tend to be a bit longer than in CLT. Providence Downs is a nice area, but there's a lot of coming and going traffic through the area. I wouldn't think twice, get the best alarm you can put in. Something that will work if the power gets cut to the house (something burglars do regularly)

Unless they build a "Berlin Wall" between Mecklenburg and Union Counties, the areas near the county lines will share a similar crime profile!

Get the alarm system - it's the upscale areas that are being targeted more often, so the nicer the neighborhood the better chance you'll get broken in to.
