Default Matthews, NC

Can anyone tell me about Matthews, NC?

Not wanting to get into a lengthy discussion about crime, I would like to know if Matthews is an area that's low in crime - meaning, an area where my Wife can go out shopping at night (Target, Walmart), and I needn't worry?

What about the housing stock? Is it older, newer, or mixed?

Also, can anyone tell me how long the drive to the main business district in Charlotte should take, during the week? What about the drive (during the week) to the Lake Norman area?

Finally, and I know that this is an off question, but prior experiences require that I ask: How's the drinking water?

Thanks so much for your time and consideration!

Both...some Matthews addresses are in Mecklenburg county and some are in Union county. It seems that addresses reference who delivers your mail. School assignments, however, would be done by county. And if you think it's confusing...well... you're right

"Can anyone tell me about Matthews, NC?"
I have lived in Matthews for 12 years and love it. It has a small town feel with a downtown area (although not much there) as well as a major road (74) running through it with all the shopping and restaurants you need or want. Close to all major areas, sports, airport, etc.

"Not wanting to get into a lengthy discussion about crime, I would like to know if Matthews is an area that's low in crime - meaning, an area where my Wife can go out shopping at night (Target, Walmart), and I needn't worry?"
Neither my wife or I have experienced any problems. But with that said, I grew up in NYC and lived in Philadelphia PA and also never had any problems in those cities.

"What about the housing stock? Is it older, newer, or mixed?"
Depends where you look. Matthews has an older section and newer homes as you move further south.

"can anyone tell me how long the drive to the main business district in Charlotte should take, during the week? What about the drive (during the week) to the Lake Norman area?"
Traffic can be bad during rush hour. the main routes from Matthews are either Monroe Road or Independence Boulevard. Can take 485 around but it can also back up. With traffic, a ride from Matthews can take about 30-45 minutes. Without, about 15-20 minutes.
To Lake Norman area, take 485 around and bypass most of the traffic.

"Finally, and I know that this is an off question, but prior experiences require that I ask: How's the drinking water?"
Water quality is good. We do not have filters on our lines.

The entire city of Matthews is in Mecklenburg County, but some of the adjacent areas are in Union County. City limits vs close to city limits. USPS mailing/delivery addresses aren't based on governmental boundaries such as cities, counties or even states.

Thanks for saying that, I was just about to myself! Some people living in Union county are very confused and think they live in Matthews! But I can understand the confusion when the mailing address says Matthews So, to repeat, Matthews is in Mecklenburg county.

Default Matthews Meck or Union County?

Your address is usually based on the Post Office your mail is processed through. We live in Weddingtion (Union County) but have to use a Waxhaw address (ZIP Code) because Weddington does not have a Post Office. Many of the residents that live in Weddington/Waxhaw have Matthews addresses probably because Waxhaw Post Office can not handled mail for the number of "rooftops" being built in South Meck and Union County.

Whether you call it Weddington, Waxhaw or Matthews, it is a great part of Charlotte to live in!

Thanks for your direct answer . Responses vary on the forum, so I am glad to hear that the crime isn't above 'acceptable' levels.

Coming from the NYC Metro area myself, a 45 minute ride with traffic isn't too bad.

Again, thanks for answering an odd question. For some time ago, I lived in an area whose water wasn't good for bathing, let alone drinking, hence the question.

Also, since you've lived in both NYC and Philly, and since you mentioned the wealth of dining choices along a major thoroughfare, I'm wondering: How are the dining options? In other words, are dining choices restricted to chain restaurants, or are there private establishments as well?

Finally, having lived in both NYC and Philly, I am sure you can appreciate where I am coming from: are there choice of parks or ponds or rivers or lakes in, or near, Matthews? For I have lived right off of the water most of my life, and I'd miss tremendously, not having some type of aquatic life, in my backyard (so-to-speak).

Thanks for your thoughtful reply, and for your time!

Thank you all for clearing things a bit. For us, it is a matter of making sure we are in Union County because that is where we want the kids to go to school. The info on commute, etc. was also helpful.
