I'd like to know more about the area of Monroe, NC in Union County. The schools, the social environment, cost of living, etc. It's southeast of Charlotte. Anything good or bad to say about this place?

Go to the Charlotte boards, post this same question.
Monroe is not very popular amongst transplants but we love it! (We moved from Jersey in November). Do a search on some of my earlier posts. Good luck! SL |

I've read a some of posts saying negative things about Monroe, but nothing really specific. They just say it has "bad areas," but what does that mean? For a town of 30,000, how bad can it possibly be? Right now I'm living west of Detroit off of 8-mile, my interpretation of a bad area of town may be very different than others'.

Hey Reader/Reader123
I signed a contract on my home in Monroe and they began building last week. My husband and I looked in various areas of Charlotte prior to deciding on Monroe. The popular concept for a lot of developments is the PUD. They are like mini cities within themselves. Lots of those throughout Union Co. It was very hard to find a development and community all in one. We found it with our current builder. I think what makes Union Co. so attractive to me are the rolling hills, farms, wide open spaces. Being from a large city and living on top of my neighbor has probably intensified my need for open space. A PUD is not for me. My development is still in the Weddington school district (and possibly won't change according to the school board). We're probably 10-15 minutes from shopping and close to the regional airport in Monroe. I've heard that some schools in certain districts of Monroe are not as great as the Weddington distirct, but I would check the school board website to confirm that. Good Luck with your search. |

Just to add my .02 cents. I agree that the idea of not being surrounded by big developments was a factor in our decision. Our development will only have about 66 homes total. No clubhouse, community pool, Harris Teeter, etc. In Maryland, the PUD concept was started by the Rouse Company. Here they are called villages and all the combined villages made up Columbia, Maryland. In many ways its a great way to live if that is your cup of tea. Not for me.
