For the Davidson IB Middle, there is a lottery process. To apply to a CMS magnet school, you must enter a lottery during January of the year you wish to start. For the next school year, you would have had to have applied during January of 2008.
The IB is a very stringent program. First and foremost the student must have a commitment to internationalism. Then there is an assessment based on the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program criteria. Foreign language and cultural awareness are key to the program. I'm sure the full criteria are outlined on the school's website. You'd need to study the criteria and see if your student is a good candidate, then apply during January for the following Fall term.
Also a "graded" school is simply an old-fashioned term for "grade school" or one that is divided into grades. Sometimes back in the day, a school might just be called an "academy" or a "primary," "secondary" or "high" school.
