BigJon, I must respectfully disagree. I parked my Avalanche at Morocroft to go to Borders. Nothing visible valuables anywhere and yet still the wrecked the door lock and got in.
I found out later from law enforcement friends they check the glove box for guns and under the seat for lap tops...their two items of choice apparently.

I'm sorry I was generalizing....
Of course anything can happen. They could just want the car itself so what's on the seats is irrelevant.

Very interesting thread.
I have never been the victim of a home invasion, but I have given much time to thought and soul-searching as to what I would be prepared to do in that situation.
What it comes down to is that if the goons are outside, I will dial 911 and prepare to deal with them if they attempt to enter the house.
If someone enters my home uninvited, I assume they mean to do me or my family harm and will do what it takes to stop the threat. If that requires taking their life, then I am prepared to do that.

You know what? I think that the whole "property is replaceable and thus it's not worth shooting someone over" argument is crap in most cases. What if said property is a family heirloom over 100 years old? What if the property holds a deeper value to its owner? Let me tell you something, I am a Bengals fan (cue laughing)...............ok, stop laughing. I have a very old Bengals pennant. My mother bought it for me YEARS ago, when the Bengal helmet actually spelled B-E-N-G-A-L-S (and they actually had a good defense, but I digress). She bought it for no reason. Just an arbitrary purchase for me. I didn't do anything special for it, it wasn't my birthday and it wasn't a holiday. She saw it and just bought it. I didn't even ask. I remember everything about that simple transaction. For some reason, 26 years later, I remember it very fondly. A simple $2.00 pennant that I still have today. Hey, I had a terrific childhool growing up in NJ, so I have been very fortunate to have been bought plenty of other stuff that costs a lot more than that pennant but the pennant will be one of the most cherished items I have right now.
Anyway, my mother passed away in 1990. I see the pennant every day and I am reminded of that day. It is a very pleasant memory for me. Sure, I have millions of others as well, but this is one of the ones that stand out for me. It's just something that reminds me of my mother. I am sure we all have something like this pennant that reminds us of someone close to us. What I am trying to get at is if an intruder breaks into my home I will defend myself. I MAY let him get away with stealing a few things that really are replaceable, but that pennant won't be one of them. If the intruder touches that pennant, he's getting shot. Multiple times. I will warn him. I would even say take my car, not the pennant. He will not take that pennant!
Now, we all know that probability of an intruder wanting this item is pretty much zero. But the point I am trying to make is just because it's "property" doesn't mean that it's not worth shooting someone for. Sounds horrible and heartless, but the intruder lost my sympathy the minute he broke into my house and invaded my family's privacy and wanted to take something that really isn't replaceable and worthless to them but not to me.

The fact that most people don't want to shoot over property is why thugs have the gall in the first place to break in. If they knew we shoot for TV's and blenders, they'd think thrice before even looking at our homes.

I totally agree. I personally think anyone who invades someone else's house is worthy of being shot even before touching any property.

I would just assume someone w/ the audacity to break down my door and rush in would not have my best interests at heart . . .

The DAs office should be held accountable and pay for the cost of the homeowners bullet.
Their catch and release program was the reason Quinn ended up back in this guys house. Gee a habitual criminal breaks into another home, who would have thought it?
One shot, one kill. Nice shooting on the homeowners part.

I never understand why sometimes places go after the homeowner when they are clearly protecting themselves from a Criminal/Thief that broke into their house? Oh and why is the media saying he is a "suspected" criminal? Just because the homeowner didn't let the criminal make it out the door with his stuff? it's crazy...he was protecting himself/his property.
