I thought it would be informative if those familiar with Charlotte, would list their top 5 positives and 5 negatives about the Charlotte Metro area. Thanks in advance.

In no particular order:

Pros: 1. Great climate; 2. Affordable; 3. People are very friendly; 4. Strong economy; 5. Pretty and green with lots to do.

Cons: 1. Roads/school having a hard time keeping up with growth; 2. No major Div. I college football team; 3. No local medical school; 4. Charlotte doesn't do a good job at all preserving its historic buildings. They tear them down; 5. No law school.

There actually is a law school:

www.charlottelaw.org

It just opened and is still in the ABA accreditation process. As for its academic rankings... still to be seen

BTW I live just outside in Union County but about 5 miles from actually being in Mecklenburg so my thoughts on schools and a few other things are different
PROS
Affordable
Good schools
Nice, friendly neighborhoods, seem pretty accepting, I think northeast area (university/concord etc) a littel more diverse than what I notice down here
Lots to do (Carowinds, Discovery Place, Nature Museum, lots of Parks, Mountains closeby and beach about 3 hours away, events, fairs etc going on..just have to look! Plus roller and ice skating, YMCA, youth sports, pro sports etc)
Nice downtown area, plenty of shopping (malls etc)
restaurants

CONS
They don't preserve historic areas, like op mentioned..sad
Crowded roads (although being around the DC area..they are really not too bad lol)
pisspoor planning it seems on the city/county councils on how to handle growth
no rail system/mass transit
criminals seem to get out (that would be a judiciary thing though..so maybe it isn't really lack of laws/or enforcement but lack of consistency??)

Pros:
1. Great weather
2. Good paying jobs
3. Lower taxes than New England
4. Your money buys you more than many other places
5. Central location - only 3 hours to Charleston, 4 to Savannah, 3 hours to the mountains

Cons:
1. Many bad air quality days
2. City council needs to 'buy a clue'
3. Poor road maintenance
4. Poor school district planning
5. Raleigh lawmakers ignore Charlotte requests for financial support

I've found there to be a nice mix of conservatives/liberals here in the area. We don't have to always agree to get along. That's true diversity!!
