Default postal pick up for school supplies

Ok Im not sure here. I could have sworn that last night on the news they said that this coming sat you can leave out school supplies to be picked up. However, I spoke with my mailman and he said it was last sat. Anyone know correct info? I picked up school supplies today to leave out. IF I did miss it, is there somewhere I can drop these off so they can get to some well deserved kids???

Also--Up here do they do canned food drives near Thanksgiving and Xmas?? I like to donate to that as well.

Thank you so much guys! My postal guy said he heard some co workers talking about it and how no one donated. BUT I was positive that I heard it on the news tonight.

Thanks for the info on the canned drives too.

I rather drop them off in person at a needy school to ensure it reaches its destination. Maybe because I share my box with many other tenants. Charlotte Observer ran a list two weeks ago of schools in the area which are underperforming. I can't find it, but many schools will be in dire need.
