The problem with going to the beach is a third of state will have the same idea and you will be paying holiday rates if you stay over night (I cant stand sand on me traveling so I have to stay over night.) You will also will be in beach traffic so keep that in mind.

The mountains there is loads to do besides just viewing the mountains, caverns, mining, waterfalls, swimming holes.

The triad there Emerald Pointe, Vineyards, Historical lively downtown Greensboro,
Richard Petty Museum, Richard Childress Museum, Bob Timberlake Gallery , Old Salem,
Asheboro Zoo. Visit the Texas Pete Hot Sauce Head quarters. Furniture Discover Center in High Point and next door is Angela Peterson doll with over 2500 dolls on displayed then head over to Atrium mall same city and view furnishings, art and oriental rugs.

Explore the 64 room estate of the Reynolda house that has famous artwork

I will probably kayak down a river I have never been down or white water rafting even though the drought is making it mediocre in wave action.
Redbone Willy's Bluegrass & Peddler's Festival August 30th in Lawndale

Go see one of the many great outdoor dramas in the eastern and western part of the state, play in the casino, explore Mayberry and Mount Pilot.

This is just a few things I could think of.
