YEP. And that is just for NC. Heck, the stats in other states may be a lot higher!!!!

Think about this the next time you hear a politician throwing around stats about "the uninsured." (They like to say - 47 M uninsured) Did you know they are including illegal aliens in that stat? Did you know they are including people who COULD qualify for insurance and have chosen not to purchase it (for whatever reason). Many are young and have CHOSEN not to pay for insurance b/c they figure they will not need it now. Over half the uninsured have incomes over $50,000, but have chosen not to get health insurance, often b/c it is expensive. There are plans they could choose w/ lower monthly deductibles but they have high out of pocket costs.

Oh, I could go on and on. The politicians use health insurance as a hot topic, and they have exaggerated the figures on the uninsured and the REASONS why people are uninsured.

The myth that children go w/o healthcare in this country really infuriates me, as there are programs pouring in millions of $$ to EACH STATE expressly to cover children and their healthcare needs. It seems either some parents are too lazy (or embarrassed b/c of their situation) to enroll the kids or some lie and take advantage of the system. PRETTY SAD.

Free school lunches are a drop in the bucket. What we all should be concerned about is the fraud and abuse w/ healthcare insurance programs (Medicaid and Medicare, for ex) wh/ cost taxpayers billions a year. And don't believe the politicians. They are playing games w/ statistics for their own reasons.

No. They don't check. It is self reported. Not actively monitored as it should be. Can easily be abused. Actually, it is abused. Seen it a million times. I don't think they are willing to pay more tax dollars initially for the free/reduced lunch to be monitored because the cost to hire people to monitor the program will probably even out the the cost they save detecting tax leachers. Oh the good ole gub'ment!

I think you have it entirely right, Teacher. It costs more to hire people to do the monitoring than it is "worth."
