International House
International House: Home hosts lots of activities - conversation hours for people wanting to practice the language (either native speakers or learners) are especially popular from what I hear.
You might want to look at volunteering with World Affairs Council or at Smith - it's a public school that does language immersion & the German program there is strong. Voluteer work is the best way to get to know people in Charlotte - not always easy to get started, but then you can make good friends.
