Default WEIRD Question - Newton, NC

Ok, I HAVE to ask this:

While driving today from Hwy 150/16 to Hickory, along Hwy 16/10 through the town of Newton, my sister and I saw signs in almost EVERY yard:

"No Kennel Here"

Why would people post that sign in their yards? Is it because people mistake the houses for kennels??

We just couldn't fathom a logical reason, and I know it's a crazy question, but I just HAD to see if anyone knows the answer

TIA!

Maybe there is a debate about building a large kennel nearby?

Maybe the homeowners are tired of having animals dropped off in their yards, a lazy way of finding the shelter?

Yep. This. I googled "Newton NC no kennel here" and was directed to a thread about it on another message board. Topix? Or something like that. I don't think it's a particularly large kennel though -- they're just upset that it's been approved to go in a residential area.

I think the doggie day care is actually in Startown, a small community outside of Newton. I am trying to find out more about the situation, as evidently there has been a big uprising in the area about placing a business in an area zoned for residential only.

Homeowners evidently are concerned that such things as the fencing around the property, noise and traffic will lower their property values. The business evidently encompasses 5000 sq. ft but I have not gotten info as to whether an existing structure was used and converted or whether a new structure has been built - and no info as to whether the 5000 sq. ft is the size of the lot or the structure on the lot.

The bottom line is . . . residents are concerned about property values as well as annoyances, such as increased noise and traffic. The business itself sounds useful - doggie day care, grooming, dog training and breeding . . . if I got my info straight. This is second hand info. I have friends in the area.

Absolutely true. This is one step of modern NIMBY protest movement.

I recall living in Maryland a few years ago, a casino was planned for nearby Gettysburg, PA (about 10 miles from the battlefield). Every yard had either a "No Casino" or a favorable casino sign posted.

It was interesting seeing neighbors pitted against each other.

Way to go residents, farmers, and enviromentalists. Im so tickled over this . Checking out the migratory birds is one of pleasures in that area.

I am always surprised when an exception on zoning is given in a residential area. I have not driven over to Startown to neighborhood in question, so have no first hand knowledge, but even tho I think the business is a worthy one (doggie day care/grooming) I can totally understand why neighbors would be opposed to it - solely on grounds that the zoning was residential.
