sujoker is on a distinguished road
We don't get much snow and if we do, it doesn't really a stick.
One year about 6 years ago, we got about 18 inches.

temps aren't that cold. Just 20's and 30's. Sometimes in the teens.

Once again . . . someone who doesn't get our weather reporting (and reaction to it).
Anifani,

It was a joke mate...but, like all humor, there is a basis of truth in it.

Why, for example is the weather man called (cue dramatic music) the "Storm Team?" What exactly is wrong with the term "weather man?"

Why do they report in the middle of winter that tomorrow will be cold and in summer that tomorrow it will be hot? Doh, it's winter and/or summer...since time imemorial the weather is cold in winter and hot in summer...this is NOT news. It's akin to me reporting on Monday morning that after a weekend off people went into work on Monday...they do it every Monday...it's not news.

Why does the histrionic reporter dress like she's going to enter a sled race to Alaska and shove a ruler in the ground to show 2 inches of snow (and no ice) trying her damndest to make it sound like this is actually a) dramatic and b) newsworthy? (See above about winter weather through the ages.)

Regarding your defense of the natives and their fear of ice...fair enough, but they also do it if the "Storm Team" hints at rain, torrential or otherwise or when there's snow and NO ice. Nowhere else does this!!! and yes, I've lived in nine different countries to date and nobody flocks to the store for either milk or bread....they just do their normal shopping...normally.

The other thing people worry about is - electrical outages. Until you have experienced over 1 M people in this region w/o electricity due to the "ground getting wet" - you have no clue what you are talking about.
But I have experienced this...in fact in two of the nine countries I've lived in black and brown outs happened on a regular basis...sorry, no rushing about like locusts in either country. They use things like candles and lanterns (perhaps you've heard of them ) and soldier on.

As for the line about seeing how many non-natives smash up their cars during ice storms my hat is off to you...Last time I looked there's no real way to tell whether someone is a native or not by looking at their vehicle if they've been living her long enough to have NC tags. Exactly how is it you've determined where they're from? The AAA doesn't keep stats of where they're from and the news I watch doesn't say "another bunch of them crazy northeners crashed today 'cause they can't drive in ice." Are you actually getting out of your car and asking where these people are from after witnessing them crash?

PS: written by someone who's lived her for sixteen years and successfully negotiated the mean streets of Charlotte in his SUV and motorbike in every winter and summer since living here without a single crash/skid etc. In fact the only accident I had was when a Charlotte native (and yes, I asked) drove into the front of my car while I was at a STOP sign...she was on her phone when she hit me, and she was still on it 45 minutes later when the Officer turned up and asked her to terminate her call. Let's all hope she's better on the ice than she is on the phone.

I've definitely seen a Giant Eagle around Pittsburgh cleaned out of milk and bread before a storm...

Normally I head to the ABC store and get something that will keep me warm and not go bad when the power goes out

Just explaining the reasons why people react here.

I'm with you there.

Thankfully, it really doesn't snow here. I've seen a total of about 3" of snow here in my 3 winters. No ice either. For this, I'm thankful, as I dealt w/ too much in the Snow Belt of Northeast Ohio.

I travel the country and the world on a regular basis and Charlotte certainly does not have a monopoly on this silly reporting. It is called 'filler'. The weather has time to fill in the newscast.

I was in rural MA for 10 days in December and they were talking about how cold it was and how much snow was on the way. A 'man on the street' was standing on some street in Boston while the snow was pouring down...
DOH! It is winter, it is cold, and it is snowing in New England - no s**t...
