Price spread (Crazy) on new HVAC
I got 3 prices last week on a new installation of HVAC. All three were given the same specs. All three very reputable as far as I can tell. Two out of three in fact were recommendations from this forum.
1) $9900. Big international firm. More all less recommended tearing the whole house down (just kidding)
2) $8400
3) $5300. Looked at the job 2 times. Good ideas where to put unit, vents and good idea as to where we could get a return. Showed me complete specs on the unit. In biz since 1980 and was doing an install about 3/4 mile away.
Asked him if he would do the job for $5000 and start Tues. Said OK and I'll start Monday.
Will keep you all posted end of next week with full details if all goes well
P.S. House is 1425 sf

How big is this system? I hope you're getting R-401.

Its a new refrigerant that's replacing R-22. My HVAC contractor is replacing our entire system, heat pump & air handler, that died about a month ago with a system that uses the new refrigerant. The old heat pump is going to be added to my wife's studio. We're getting a 1.5 ton air handler & heat pump installed for $2k.

R22 will still be available, just not as widely used and new units will not be using it either.
We found the same thing with A/C companies. One was $5K, the next was $3500. The $3500 deal went down to $3200 out the door and it was installed the next day. They didn't collect a dime from me until the week AFTER it was installed. Now that's some service!

Took the time this morning (not too late) to read the details on the system I bought. Yes R 410 (not 401?)
Quote: R 410 refrigerant is next-generation refrigerent that is 'chlorine-free' and therefore better for envirnoment (ozone level).
Side note: The clean Air Act requires that in 2010 all new air conditioner units use chlorine free refrigerants. I'm sure somebody early on will get stuck with a unit that is not compliant that happened to be lying in the installer's shop.

I found the same thing and saved a ton of money using a smaller company that works around SE Charlotte. The large company with the jingle 24/7 on the radio and TV wanted nearly 2x for the same units installed (same brand, same model numbers).
