I have been exploring/research a fair bit myself. I have a friend there
who is married with no kids. Does not own a car but rents when he wants
(say over the weekend to go to Canada or what have you)...eats well,
goes for movies, keeps wife happy (shopping!) etc.....
Not a flash life, lives in NJ (somewhere there about 20 mins from manhatt
on the train) in a studio apartment rental ~1200....
Let me tell you he does not earn 6 figures. He earns 65k gross and he
says he manages to save 1000$ a month after all expenses. Now, it totally
depends how much money you want to spend and in that case even 500k may
not be enough....
But with the life he has, he is managing in 65k gross and saving. Agree
there are certain things that someone else may not be able to give up
e.g a Car and eating out every other day etc....
But, I have read a lot on this thread pushing for 6 figure salary as a
min. Btw he does not have kids and add that to the equation and then it
will get interesting! However just as a guide I thought I post...
The point is - it's up to you what lifestyle you want and how much you
want to spend. Of course there is a min that you would want to earn to
survive but if you are smart to budget accordingly and live through the
rough times - well then it's really up to you..
All the best!
