Statesville - crime?
Someone who says she's familiar with the area told me to steer clear of Statesville. That the crime rate there is worse than surrounding areas.
Is this a fact?

No more than any other areas. I've lived in Statesville for ~30 years.

Hm...This doesn't tell me much since I know nothing about the other areas.
All things being relative, you know?
When I think of a low crime area, I mean can you leave your front door unlocked during the day and for a while in the evening?
Can you leave your garage door up after sunset without worrying?
Does your neighborhood have much vandalism?
Can you leave your car door unlocked on occasion in the grocery store parking lot?
Would you let your children play in an unfenced front yard during the day?
Do you have neighborhood watch areas?
When was the last time one of your neighbors was hauled off in handcuffs?
(J/K but I think you catch my drift).

Statesville or not, I would not do any of those things on a regular basis. I do not live in a high-crime area of Charlotte by any means, but I take precautions all the time to stay safe. Regardless of where you choose to live in Statesville, please remember Charlotte is nearby, and it is a major city with the same issues any big city has.
That said, welcome and good luck!

What's with Salisbury?
I just found a crime profile on Salisbury saying
Quote:
|
Salisbury's property crime levels tend to be higher than North Carolina's average level. The same data shows violent crime levels in Salisbury tend to be much higher than North Carolina's average level.
|
Shoot. We have seen lots of nice houses there. Is something else going on in hat area that people are selling and leaving?

People are not fleeing Salisbury. It is really too far from both Charlotte and the Winston-Salem area to be affected by population booms. And, there is not a decline, either.
However, yes, Salisbury does have some high crime areas. It is hit and miss there as well. If you give more specific areas of Salisbury, I can help.
In Rowan County, you want to avoid East Spencer (like the plague), any homes in the Hanford-Dole Elementary zone and the Isenburg Elementary zone. Most of the North Rowan Elementary zone is not too great, either. As for the rest- well, there are nice neighborhoods and bad ones. You have to be specific.
In Rowan county, you want to buy homes in the Faith Elementary zone, Enochville Elementary zone, Bostian Heights Elementary zone, Mt. Ulla Elementary zone or Morgan Elementary zone. You won't find many problems in these areas for the most part.
Rockwell and China Grove are both pretty nice towns.

Thanks, Jaynarie. We don't have to be concerned with school districts nowadays. Done raising the kids
I will take it under advisement about East Spencer, though.

I'm afraid this is true, unfortunately. The statistical data you are looking for is all on this website. Just compare Statesville's crime data to Mooresville's (about 15 minutes south but in the same county). Statesville is becoming a scary place to live. There are many 'bad' areas, and an incredibly high number of empty buildings where businesses have bailed. Most of the hotels are shady at best, and retail tends to have no interest in the area.
