Those instructions are helpful. But, what are people doing if they have water restrictions (out here in Kannapolis)??? Does that mean I can never re-seed my lawn since I won't be able to water? Should I just ignore it and water anyways?
What exactly are your water restrictions? With it getting cold at night you do not need a ton of water atm. Just 10-20 minutes here and there until it starts growing.
I think I could get away with that, but the restrictions are that you can only water plants/flowers/trees on tuesdays and saturdays, no lawn or sprinkler watering. I haven't checked in a week or two though, the restrictions may be over now.
I use a seed called "Defiance XRE" it is a tall fescue with rhizomes. What that means is that when it is mature or established that it will fill in bare spots and recover from scuffs and things like that. It is drought tolerant and has a resistance to brown patch which is pretty big down here. Also it comes up really dark green. I bought mine from a lawn care company called Yard Organics when they were in my neighborhood. I got their card and I know they have a website. www.yardorganics.com This is my second year using the seed and the way that it has grown I don't think that I will need to seed again for a while.
I live in Charlotte and I'm wondering if now is a good time to put a pre-emergent on the lawn. My backyard was pretty much half crabgrass, half lawn last year and I need to fight the crabgrass before it starts growing again. But timing is very important with that.
The upcoming days will still be cold, especially at night. So do you think I should wait until we're no longer at the freezing point at night?

The "rule" is after Feb 15th and before March 15th in this area. So yes, it is almost time to put down the crabgrass preventer!

I'm dealing with the same issue... what kind of crabgrass preventer are you referring to? Will I need to re-seed after using the crabgrass stuff, or will the grass grow to cover the bare patches?
Will this work on it's own, or is it better to follow the whole reseeding process described earlier in this thread?

I am getting ready to put down some Scott's "Halt" this Presidents day. Scott's "Halt" claims to, "stops crabgrass, foxtail, spurge, and 6 other problem weeds before they start". It also states that "Rain, Snow, or freezing weather after application will not affect the performance of this product", so I would imagine it really doesn't matter if you miss your window in Feburary.
I am using this to get rid of a slow crawl from my neighbors side of the yard. It was a little pricey, but I figured I will experiment with it and see how it does. If it is successful I will repost later on...
I bought Scott's "TurfBuilder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer" and hope for the best. The description on Scott's website sounds quite promising.
