Default Day trip: Columbia, Winston-Salem or elsewhere?

Hi folks, my girlfriend and i have moved here from MN and IA respectivley, and we have gotten out of charlotte a few times to check out the regional perifery. Next wkd we are thinking of doing a day trip to Raliegh-Durham, Winston-Salem or Columbia,SC. We are open to other places that have pedestrian friendly downtowns with things to do. Which city would provide us a good time? Or are there other worthwhile destinations for a day trip that we have not considered? We have already checked out Asheville and Charleston is a little to far. Thanks.
