Are you sure you can't turn your lights to the "on" position if you want to? You should be able to move them from "auto" to "on" or just to the parking lights.

We're conserving energy. Between no headlights and properly inflated tires, we'll be energy-independent in, umm.....nevermind.

But it does help get better gas mileage, right? No? Oh well, I tried.

On topic, I think no headlights on in the rain is a dangerous situation with reduced visbility and the unknown condition of wiper blades on most cars. Honestly, who checks their wiper blades?

That does sound pretty crazy not to have headlights on in the rain. It is the law here to have headlights on if it is raining so IDK and plus it is hard to see if it is foggy and rainy. It just seems like common sense but maybe they don't know about the law. They taught it to us in drivers ed when I was 14 which was a long time ago.

Sometimes you see signs when you're crossing state lines that say tell you to turn your lights on when it's raining, but I've driven through too many states to be able to tell you exactly which ones...

It's just common sense to me, and like a habit. It's raining. I can't see well. I turn on my wipers and lights. End of story.

Of course, common sense tends to be in short supply...

It is totally common sense like when I walk into a dark room and I can't see anything because it is dark I turn on the light. When it is raining and I can't see well I also turn on the lights and wipers. I wouldn't want anybody to run into me and I don't want to wreck my car. Yeah, common sense does seem to be in short supply.

Maybe they just forgot - you could always flash your headlights and try to give the person a heads up...oh yeah it's illegal, not worth the risk, might get a ticket, just let them go on their merry way...

I've noticed that too and it's pretty bad. On the weekend, you can even find people driving without lights on early in the evening! On a clear night!

I have the same issue as Whytewulf. No, you cannot force the lights on. The sensor always overrides the switch setting. The manufacturer (Toyota) recommends leaving the switch in the Auto poisition.

The only thing I can control is the running lights.

Thanks superk and doorway IMO that is kinda risky especially in this state since like this morning alot of fog. If you ever have drivers behind you riding your bumper you may know reason why.
Oh wait I have this problem with my tail lights on.

I check about once every couple weeks. In fact, one of my cars needs a new set I keep forgetting about.
