Things must be getting bad... a few nights ago I noticed an pastry place that had a "Grand Opening" sign still hanging from the top of the building ... but a "please help us stay open" notice on the window. Makes me wonder how many new businesses have been launched in the last year that were thinly capitalized.

Here's an article I found on Yahoo about what will be closing this year.

I think this is just the beginning of so many closures - especially w/ mom n pop businesses. Chains are closing down slower profit centers, as well.

FWIW, the Jan 23 (this week's) Charlotte Business Journal has a story that gives some details on the closing of Good Old Days (Arboretum).

Same old unfortunate story, and underfunded and inexperienced guy thinks that the restaurant business will make them sucessful. The last time I was there, Dave and the whole family was in there working their butts off and the place was not even half full. You just knew it wasn't going to go well.

CVS bought Caremark last year. I think CVS and Rite Aid had some convoluted agreement to buy Eckerd's.

Well, and the food was absolutely horrible IMHO.
BUT we never ate breakfast there, only lunch and dinner occasionally over 10+ years.
We always wanted it to be good.

Perhaps breakfast was their meal.

Agreed, never had anything more than a burger there. The kids liked it though.
