I'm looking to clear a few concerns I have after reading some posts on crime, home invasions and murders in the Charlotte Posts. I currently live on Long Island in NY. Petty crime is all we have here. We can leave our homes unlocked and leave our cars unlocked with our keys inside. About an hour west of us towards NYC you hear more about crime but nothing like I hear about there or degree of frequency. I have several relatives who live in Huntersville and Gaston County who love it and crime is not a topic of our conversations. We are eagerly waiting until we can join them and move there this year. So my questions is...Is Huntersville and the Lake communities away from these violent crimes? Are the posts referring to communities towards Charlotte more? Is this area as safe as the one I am currently residing in?I think if there was a separate post site for Huntersville/Lake communities we would obtain a truer picture of the area.
Thank you in advance for your response.

Lake Norman "communities" are small towns. Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Davidson.

I don't have specific info about each towns crime stats, but IIRC they have much less crime (per capita) than Charlotte. Your best bet is to contact each town's PD and ask them about your specific crime concerns.

Huntersville is a small town. Charlotte is huge . Major difference in crime however very little crime in Charlotte bleeds into the lake area and I think it due to there very few roads for crooks to escape and hide to go back into charlotte.

Let me put it this way how comfortable I am . I sleep with my windows open, walk the dog at night, hike nature trails alone and often leave my car unlock during the day at home.

Check out these crime reports and I dont even have to look at it due it generally the Huntersville Police handling traffic violations more than serious crime. Crime Scene (http://www.huntersvilleherald.com/news/crime_scene/ - broken link)

The communities that NCgirl listed are very safe. However, crime can seep in any direction. Please remember: S. Charlotte used to be a safe haven w/ even petty crime (other than shop lifting) being rare.

The thugs go to where they can easily get in and out . . . and where homeowners are not paying attention. So the attitudes of the homeowners also affects crime. We have had a lot of people move here from the NE who are very lax about leaving garage doors open, not locking doors, leaving blinds open, etc. When that happens - it puts whole neighborhoods at risk.

As far as home invasions - Thugs only go where they assume they can break in easily . . . and rip off a nice haul quickly.
