Well, since you bring up that....I will tell you that one thing we have more of here is TIME! My boys are in golf, cubscouts, basketball and such and we never had time to do that in CA. Golfing is MUCH less here than in LA and we never had time for much of it anyway.

Im a rare one. We were shocked at home prices here. I moved here from Mississippi, and your housing dollar goes about as far as possible. When we started looking at homes here, we couldn't believe how much more expensive they were, and without as much nice stuff! But thats uncommon for most people..

Our homeowners and car insurance is cheaper. I also think restaurants are less expensive overall...

Hi, I moved from Suffolk County, NY. As has been stated, housing - cheaper; property taxes - way cheaper! Car insurance - cheaper. However, it seems that groceries are about the same - meat is slightly higher. Overall, though, Charlotte is much more affordable than the tri-state area. Like many, we decided to move here without family. After we had made the decision, however, my sister and her family came down, looked around, fell in LOVE with the area and decided to purchase and move as well. Their home should be ready in June/July. Do what is best for you and your family - you never know who might decide to follow you! Good Luck!

Default jobs

my husband does business consulting for a large worlwide company so he can work anywhere that is near an airport. I have my masters in counseling and will eventually go into private practice so I can be anywhere as well. I am giving up my business here though.

I think a lot of people are intheir 40's and are retired cops from NYC. They deserve to retire young!

Default costs in Charlotte

Hi - we've been here for going on 3 weeks, and my DH and I discussed this just today. Cost of living here does not appear lower than elsewhere, but the housing will get you more for the $, and it's very nice.

We left southern OR a few weeks ago, where everything is expensive except for car insurance -- groceries and houses are very pricey (and the housing is ghastly). We previously lived in a town just west of Leesburg, VA, for 5 years, and COL here reminds me very much of there (minus housing). Eating out is the same cost -- we are in Ballantyne, so maybe prices are more here, but I have not found them to be any different than noVA/D.C. prices, so nothing we aren't used to. My DH will be commuting to another city for work (he's a pilot), and I telecommute for my company in northern VA. We came here to live closer to our families in NJ, PA, and MD, and because we had to get out of OR and weren't going back to those housing prices in VA! (or those winters).

Good luck. We're very happy to be here, it really does seem like a nice area.

Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. We moved here from Arizona in November of '06

So far:

Car insurance--we are paying about 1/2 of what we paid in the Phoenix area....very very happy about that.

Housing is a lot less expensive here since the Arizona housing boom....very happy about that one too.

Groceries--I don't find it to be a great bargain here, but if you watch, you can get what you want/need without choaking too much. I would, however, like to find milk under $2 a gallon on sale again sometime soon.

Jobs--DH is in construction and he is getting a better wage here, but what's up with health insurance??? No one seems to have it in his field. Right now, we are buying a policy outright, and it's SUPER high in cost for a family of 4. I guess I'm just spoiled.

I was in mgt. for a global company, but left when we moved to NC. I have been offered two positions...one contract job (very very very good wage, but again no benefits) anyway, turned them both down to open my own business which I've always wanted to do.

And just for giggles, thought I'd throw in my comments on the NC DMV...what a nightmare. CRANKY nasty people. Took the mandatory written and visual sight and sign test and passed OK there, but since our auto insurance had my husbands name listed first, they claimed I was not covered and declined my drivers lic.! Folks, make sure your names are both listed in the same spot on your cards and/or insurance binders. I had to return to the DMV 3 times - finally with a special form from my insurance agent indicating that I was indeed insured and on the policy. They seemed to be more concerned with "the rules" rather then using good old fashioned common sense and read the insurance document I was pointing out to them where my name was in black and white. I'm glad I don't have to return there for 8 years. That whole ordeal was a big ol' pain...no southern hospitality there. <giggle>

Anyway, all and all, we love it here and haven't looked back once. Well, OK....once, when at the DMV.
