Definitely a good lead and I thank you again for posting this info. I believe you also posted some info on some healthcare jobs in the same region. I don't know if people are overlooking the jobs or what. Maybe they are just not commenting. I think it is wonderful when our members post jobs and I hope folks are not automatically ruling them out just b/c of a commute. And as you said, if they wished to live closer, there are nice apartments in that area, as well.

A few days ago, a few posts back, someone mentioned asking about the economic situation in "RDU." RDU is the airport. I think you mean the Triangle, and that includes Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, and a slew of smaller surrounding towns. (And RTP is the huge office park, BTW.)

Our streets are also not paved in gold.

It's very, very bad here.

Very.

We typically use airport codes on this forum, meaning - MSA for the region that is served by that airport - and yes, would include the "triangle" and all the burgs in that MSA.

I believe that regions unemployment, tho, is still not as bad as CLT's. At least, the last figures I saw were not as bad. However, it is still worse than most of the country! I just don't think folks understand that and what it means.

Really glad you weighed in. Our state is suffering overall. Now, the one bright spot for folks relocating may be RETIREES, especially those who have a guaranteed pension. They may be able to find a really nice home at a great price now. So for retirees who may be considering moving here - now might be a really good time to make that decision.

Thanks, Ani. Yes I posted about an opening for an RN at a subsidiary of Merck. I kind of think that people are scared off about this area. I did get a very nice note about the power plant jobs this afternoon.

There are 2 construction sites in the city, but no signs up yet. The county is building a beautiful new nursing home/assisted living facility in town, right now. There will probably be a need for workers there.

People around here are thinking that when the recession starts to ease, a fair amount of retail may come in here. The Ingles supermarket is drawing people from all over, so Ingles has proven that a company can come into Kings Mountain & do quite well.

I just felt a need to respond to a poster saying that there are no big construction projects when I had just posted for 600 jobs, for 18 months. Granted, the project is not in a prime location for a lot of people, but it's a real project with real jobs, not that far away.

maybe you have cleveland county confused with gaston county*if that's even possible* because cleveland county doesnt have loads of jobs or apartments.

cleveland county is better for really really old people & little kids in elementary school.

gaston county is a better choice in my opinion.

You are certainly welcome to your opinion. However, there is a power plant being built in the county portion of Kings Mountain, near Grover. That's Cleveland County, last I looked. I posted a link concerning this, from the company's website. There are 600 jobs connected to that. That is what I referred to. Bet you didn't look for that post, did you?

Strangely enough I live in the city of Kings Mountain & there are a lot of apartments in the city & in the county. Not as many as Gastonia, but they are certainly here. There are single family homes & apartments on my street.

Perhaps you might want to check things out before accusing people of not knowing what they are talking about. But then, that's just my opinion.

if you want to think kings mountain is a good recommendation for new comers then be my guest. i wont knock your personal opinion. yay for a new power plant in kings mountain.

but i do live in a town that somehow it made it to forbes list of one of the most vulnerable cities & towns last year & people are STILL getting laid off. the same people you see at the unemployment office, you'll see at the community college trying to gain a different trade since most of the plants have closed or on the verge of closing. i'm just glad some of my family members were LUCKY enough to retire before the economy completely bottomed out.

there are a lot of people barely getting by with the apartments & houses they already have. times is hard in cleveland county but hey, thats just what i hear & see everyday from family & friends & even strangers who cant help but express their frustrations with the way things are these days.

its pretty sad.

Well, you can take my post any way you want to. I posted real job openings & the length of the jobs. This was a job recommendation for people already here.

Why knock SB295 for posting about potential jobs in Cleveland County? No one is forcing anyone to LIVE in the county they work, its just about the job(s). You can certainly live in Gaston and work in Cleveland county if you desire. Can't you distinguish that?

That's the whole point. If you don't want to live where the job is - COMMUTE. I had put on this thread (or another thread - I get them mixed up) that I had a friend who commuted from Mountain City, TN to Lenoir, NC every day of his life to work at the Broyhill plant there - for over 20 years. He picked up other folks along the way in his van, who lived in both Watauga County and Caldwell County and rode w/ him to their jobs at the Broyhill plant in Lenoir. Of course, that plant no longer exists. I also had another friend who lived in Alexander County, northwest of Taylorsville, and drove daily to Charlotte for his job for at least a decade. And that was back in the 80s when the roads were not finished - it was a hard drive. You do what you have to do to get to a job you can secure to feed your family. They both had small tree farms so it wasn't like they could leave their home and relocate. I myself have driven almost 45 miles to work.

If you really need a job and are qualified for something in the region, you can always get a job, commute, and then look for work closer to home after the economy gears up.

Or you could do as my hubby and I have done, and relocate 1000 miles to a new city and new job. But for heaven's sake, don't move until you have a job nailed down.
