Is it okay for me to criticize the poor, low skilled, industrial workers from the rust belt who move here with no jobs, overwhelm our schools and infrastructure, suckle on the government teet and complain non-stop? Just checking.

Oh dear. The huddled masses, as it were. Yes, this is a dilemma. But everyone has to go somewhere . . . I believe Ellis Island is a tribute to those who came here in terrible situations . . .
I know what you are saying, PH. And I would be a hypocrite if I said I want this state over run w/ the needy from others regions. However, everyone deserves the right to earn a living and I find it difficult to criticize too much at this point in history, knowing how many people have lost jobs in various states across this country. I also continue to be distressed over how many jobs we have lost here in NC and SC due to furniture/textile factory shut downs. I have seen what that has done to families - and competition is fierce here for jobs.
I think we need to look after those who have been tax paying citizens here first. And I would hope others would not come unless they have jobs lined up. But in all honesty, YES, I do worry about what effect it is going to have on our economy here in NC if so many people - who need state assistance (i.e. Medicaid, food stamps, etc) - keep flooding into our region.

If it makes you feel any more at ease, it most certainly is not because you are from NY. I am on a small "team" at work of just 5 people, newly created "team" and out of 5 of us, 3 are from NY, FYI.

Now is traditionally a terrible time to find a job (from around Thanksgiving til after New Year's). Don't get down. Hopefully, things will get better after the first of the year for a job search.
It was important you did your home renovation and maybe things would have been very chaotic if you had found a job earlier. I hope it will all work out for you in several months.

I moved from WNY 3.5 years ago for a career change and greener pastures. YES, NYC people can be overbearing and annoying. NYC is one of many reasons the economy in WNY sucks!!
Charlotte is a nice, but not perfect. The schools are poorly managed and road names change at intersections. Moving from a "blue collar" city to a "white collar" city is a tough pill, but the economy is better. I find it amazing how the Durham/Chapel Hill area have much better roads than Charlotte and the layout isn't as confussing.
The locals from Charlotte are nice and friendly. When you go toward Gastonia, people openly HATE everyone from the North and Charlotte!!
Go Bills and Sabres!!

The unskilled factory workers bring the work ethic that most southern people lack. There are so many trust funded people in Charlotte that it blows the average person's mind. Many of the people in Meyer Park never had to work for anything due to massive amounts of family wealth. High schools in the North educate people to gain employment and the quality parallels that of a southern community college. There are great universities in the South, but the high schools need help. After teaching in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Gaston County Schools, I can admit there are some serious problems.
Why is the South so anti-union? Unions only build better and stronger communities.
