Default How to move to South Charlotte?- help

I am relocating from NY to Charlotte because of a job relocation.
My company is not paying moving costs- dont' let me get started.

Can anyone suggest the best, and most inexpenisve way to move my
belongings; I dont' have pianos, roman statues, iron cribs or lialic, or marble vases, nor any heavy stuff( no applicances,; mostly wife's jewelry, kid's clothes & stuff aninmals oh and my three flannel shirts & some ties- other than that- three couches, two coffe tables, a dining, kitchen table and chairs 2 bedroom sets and a crib, a treadmill( probably heavist piece), and last but not least a couple of blackberrys.
I am driving my car down with three sedated cats- the dachsund will fly first class- with the rest of the family.
Any suggestions, recommendatoins, companies, would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Frank from NY

When we moved, we used a company affiliated with one of the national lines -- (I think it was Armstrong? But I can't remember because it was 8+ years ago..)we wanted to make sure all our stuff got here safely. I know a lot of people use PODS -- I think there might be a thread on this board. Best of luck

I would suggest calling three or more major companies like Mayflower, Graebel, United and get quotes. Then go with the one that has the lowest cost AND is insured. Good luck .

Have you looked into Pods? I know a bunch of people who went that route and were more than happy.

For economy, i would look into PODS as well. This will be more cost effective if you pack/box everything yourself. You can then hire someone to load the pods. Like 2 Men and a Truck or some other local mover. Then you can hire 2 Men and a Truck here in Charlotte to unpack.

I ended up hiring Armstrong Relocation. My company wouldn't pay for the move either. I actually had to pack up my home in MS, and my Fiance's home. Im not sure how much that added to the total, probably not a whole lot. Anyway, I didnt have the time or ability to pack up all my stuff myself, so i had them do a full pack and move.

The cost??? Sit down. $9,000.
The upside??? I think we only had 1 piece of glass broken.

I will say, that the move was totally stressful. We were in boxes for months. Its just now getting to look normal around here. Of course it was too houses crammed into one. Im still angry at the amount of stuf we have thrown away or given to Goodwill SINCE weve unpacked. We really should have done that BEFORE the move. I basically paid to move a bunch of things i didnt want or need. So my 1st advice would be to get rid of A LOT of stuff. Its amazing how much crap we keep that we dont use.....

edit: another one...

Default Hi Frank

My family and I recently moved from Fort Lauderdale to Kannapolis, we used upack a division of ABF. For 8 ft of trailer space cost $900. I shopped around alot, and these guys were by far the cheapest. Good Luck!

Long distance moves go by total weight. The heavier your stuff the more you pay. They weigh the truck before picking up your belongings and again after to determine weight. Most companies want you to witness weigh-ins to avoid any discrepancies.

2 years ago when we moved, it was $3200 from CT to NC. We did not move major Kitchen appliances and had 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, dining room and washer and dryer. We packed ourselves. We called several local companies (CT) and got quotes from each. We ended up using a local company and saved $3,000-$4,000 from the national companies. We also found that pods were around the same amount and we had to do all of the work. The company we chose loaded and unloaded all of our boxes, set up our beds, connected our washer and dryer when we arrived. We had to pack and unpack. Best of luck in your move!

I just checked out the upack site, the quote I received was almost 1/2 of what PODS quote came out. I am definitely exploring UPACK further. Thanks so much for the info.
