Sushi Virgin
OK, I finally broke down and tried some sushi recently. Boy, am I glad I did. What an incredibly interesting and complex texture and taste! My question is, since I'm new to the experience, and I don't personally know of anyone else who eats sushi, is how to identify what specifically I'm eating? The last time I was watching the chef (is that the correct term?) preparing some with avocado (I love avocado) so I asked him what else was in it. He told me it was avacado, salmon, and squid together with the seaweed and rice. When I tried it, wow, was that good. Some of the others seemed to have some sort of nut (or something else crunchy). Today he offered me salmon. What is usually done with that? Is there something else I'm supposed to eat with it, like rice? Is it typical to use the wasabi or other sauces with sushi?

I always heard sushi is at its best when you fry it up in some butter!
Just kidding of course. Sorry that I can't offer help to your question. I've never had sushi and I don't foresee that changing during my remaining days on this great Earth. However, our DD is just crazy about the stuff and makes us buy it when we shop at H-T.

OK,,,,here's the deal:
The ginger given to you on the side when you order sushi is supposed to be eaten seperatly in between different types of sushi to cleanse the pallet. Some people like to add a piece of the ginger, some wasabi and then dip in soy sauce.
I like to use the wasabi....dip in soy..
There is soooooooo many different combo rolls and different types of sushi you need to experiment to see what you like.
Sashimi is the chilled fish with no rice
Nigiri is the fish on a piece of sticky sushi rice (probably the most common here)
I recommend yellowtail...I find it to be the best!

Looove yellowtail! Dip it in the soy sauce, maybe put a touch of wasabi on it. Wasabi is HOT so be careful. I personally don't think you need it on good sushi. I like spicy crab, spicy shrimp, Calif roll, and tuna as well. Also temago, which is actually cooked egg. Good eating!

Don't get carried away with the ginger. It's worse than a mouthful of Altoids or some other strong mint. Can definately take your breath away.
My favorites when it comes to sushi are octopus, crab, yellowfin, and while not technically sushi, baked mussels from Nakato (they're served at the sushi bar).
Just do yourself a favor and never buy sushi from a supermarket. It is okay, but nothing like getting it made in front of you and I can tell the difference. Besides, I don't like the idea of my sushi sitting out all day for a bunch of people to fondle.

Love me some sushi! I eat it as the poster above said, each piece with a touch of ginger and dipped in soy sauce which I have usually swirled with a bit of wasabi. I know ginger is supposed to be eaten in between, but I just love it so much with the flavor of the sushi that I eat it with every bite.

I was always nervous about trying sushi but once I did, I was hooked! I suggest next time you are at your sushi place, look around and see if there is anyone else by themselves, strike up a conversation and get you a sushi buddy! Unfortunately the doc has forbid me from eating sushi for the next nine months Its going to be a long winter!

Spanish mackerel is also excellent! I add my wasabi to soy sauce in the little dish provided. The only thing I don't dip in the soy sauce mixture is the eel roll...the sauce that comes with that is wonderful all by itself!
