African-American migration helps make University City a melting pot of cultures
By Earnest Winston
Photos by Richard Rudisill
Many transplants to Charlotte discover University City has just what they’re looking for. When Clair and Alan Lane were planning on moving from Hackensack, N.J., to Charlotte three years ago, they told their real estate agent they wanted to live in a diverse neighborhood. It took the couple six months to find the right community — one that, in addition to diversity, offered nearby shopping and golf, and access to major highways and medical facilities.
Their search stopped at Fountaingrove in University City.
“A lot of it had to do with what was available in University City and how (the area) was growing,” said Alan Lane, who retired in 2001 from the telecommunications industry.
The Lanes are among a growing wave of African-Americans who are migrating to the South from the Northeast and Midwest, among other parts of the United States.
Many African-Americans — and other minorities — are putting down roots in the University City area, creating what leaders say are some of the most racially and economically diverse neighborhoods in the region….

The New Great Migration
Charlotte is now the No. 3 destination for African-Americans
For Jatrine Bentsi-Enchill, it started pretty much the same way it has for everyone else. First, two physician friends of hers moved to Charlotte. They raved about what a great place it was for African-Americans, about how it wasn't topped out like Atlanta or New York, about how there was still opportunity here.
So Bentsi-Enchill, 41, and her husband packed up their things and moved from Los Angeles to a posh, 4,600-square-foot home in South Charlotte. "If you had asked me 30 years ago if I would ever have decided to live here, I'd say you were out of your mind. My perspective has changed and I think the South has changed."
She and her husband, both lawyers, have built a great life for themselves here, she said. Since 1995, an estimated 61,000 blacks of all ages, education and income levels have moved to Mecklenburg County, according to US Census and Claritas data.
Just how big are those numbers? Big enough to make Charlotte the number three relocation destination in the country for African-Americans. By the end of the last decade, Charlotte had attracted more new African-Americans than all but two other US cities, Atlanta and Dallas, according to a 2004 study by the Brookings Institute, one of Washington, DC's oldest think tanks…

An emerging middle class
African-American households show major gains over past decade
Charlotte Business Journal - February 25, 2005
by Fred Tannenbaum
When Donald and Sherlene Robinson moved to Charlotte 20 years ago, other middle-class African-American families were few and everyone seemed to know each other.
"Naturally, we tended to gravitate together," says Donald Robinson, a Bank of America Corp. senior vice president who supports the company's call centers. "Charlotte was not as big; the companies were not as big. We socialized more and knew each other more."
As Charlotte has grown, so has the size of its African-American middle class -- by more than threefold over a 10-year period. Its share of Mecklenburg County's middle class has almost doubled.
No longer can middle-class black families possibly all know each other. But that's OK with the Robinsons. They see it as a sign of progress.
Using annual household income of $50,000 to $75,000 as a benchmark, the ranks of Mecklenburg County's African-American middle-class families grew to 13,250 in 1999, the latest figures available, from 4,188 in 1989, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
That outpaces growth in that middle-class bracket in the county and the nation. The number of all Mecklenburg County families in that income bracket grew 62% to 58,829 in 1999 from 35,783 in 1989. Nationally, the number grew 49%.
African-American households now make up 22.5% of the county's middle class, up from 11.7% in 1989, Census numbers show...

I am hoping to move to area by August just in time for football season and before college basketball. I plan on purchasing season tickets for NC State, UNC, Davidson, NC Charlotte, Winthrop, JC Smith, and more. I do know the coaches at those schools but would rather just get tickets. Belieeve it or not its one of the reasons I love Charlotte and the state of NC. Your information is ALWAYS on point!!!!!!!!

Congratulations and welcome to the area!!! You picked a great place to buy. Fort Mill is very nice and is one of the really up and coming areas; plus its very affordable and the schools are great, so you've made a great investment.
