Hi There =)
I am a 24 year old, single, african american woman looking to relocate to Charlotte from the Pittsburgh area. I would like to start my life there. I will be making the move alone and was wondering if someone could shed some light on good areas to live in that are safe, affordable, and friendly. Also what is the nightlife like down there? I was there once and visited the University area and thought that was where I wanted to live, but after reading some of the posts I am rethinking that. LOL! I really want to live in an area that has some things to do and has shopping close by. I really want to try to meet some new people--any ideas?
Any light that you can shed on Charlotte would be greatly appreciated!
Well, I moved here as an old married woman, LOL, so I can't comment too much on single life, but I have met several single folks who live in the Ballantyne area in the apartments around there and also around the Rae Rd./Stonecrest area.
I’ve said it once on this board and I’ll repeat it again here…The University Area is “not” the hood. Far from it. What it is “is” a very fast growing and diverse area of the city. It has the largest number of African-American professionals; but “not” the largest number (percentage) of African-Americans; that would be the West side of town, which, to be honest, you probably would not want to move too. There are areas that are nicer than others, and I would caution someone considering moving there to stay away from what I call the “fringe” areas of U City; areas called “North Charlotte” and “East Charlotte”. Contrary to popular belief University City is still a majority Caucasian area of the city; though the numbers are probably shrinking. With that said, rather you’d want to live there, in my opinion, would depend on if you’re a young single person, or someone moving with a family; i.e. kids. Why? Because the school assignments in University City are “not” good at all. The school assignment issue is probably the main reason you read so many negative statements here about the area. Overall, I wouldn’t discourage you from moving there. If you wanted to be near a fair number of African-Americans other nice areas to consider are Huntersville, Steel Creek and the Mount Holly/Huntersville Road areas. But Charlotte is really a pretty diverse city all around; so I wouldn’t limit looking in just those places.
I’ll PM you some other info later you might like (nightlife, events, etc.)
Thanks for all of the information! =) I really appreciate it. I am also looking into going to the UNCC and getting my Masters in Communications. The more information that I know the more I am really wanting to move to Charlotte.
Any one else with information---please feel free! =0)

Please tell us your price range for rent or buying a home
I've lived here for about 6 years. Live anywhere outside of uptown Charlotte, but do not go to North Charlotte. Would not want to read about you on the news!

This quote is completely wrong. How about being helpful if you want to hang out.
Sugar123 has a right to her opinion as do the rest of us.
