Default Energy Star Tax Free Weekend Question

The Tax Free weekend for energy star appliances is coming up November 7-9 for North Carolina and include:

Clothes Washers & Dryers
Fridges
Freezers
Air Conditioners
Programmable Thermostats
Heat Pumps
Dehumidifiers

I'm gonna be in the market for a dehumidifier and was wonder if anyone could recommend a good brand or place to purchase it around Charlotte. I'd be looking for one that does NOT auto drain and could cover an apt that's about 1200 sq ft.

Is there any features that really come in handy that I should look for on the box? What sort of price do these typically run?

TIA

I have this one, costs about $200.

50 pint dehumidifier with auto-restart and automatic Humidistat control/energy timer. Front-removable bucket and bucket-full indicator, plus automatic defrost control and external drain connector.

Energy Star® compliant
Washable air filter
Bucket full indicator lamp
Auto restart in case of power failure
External drain connector with rotary compressor
Touch-pad button fan-speed selection
Efficiency of dehumidification is reduced when room temperature falls below 65 degrees

The pints refer to the amount of water that can be pulled in 24 hours the higher the number the better.

The bucket hold approx 22pints if I remember rightly, in miami there was a couple of weeks I had to empty the bucket twice daily, but usually every day was fine.

It has the drain option if you ever need it(never used it)

Here's an article from this year but I'd assume all the appliances that were valid last year will still be valid this year.

Tax break on big appliances this weekend - CharlotteObserver.com

For Meck Residents it's a 8.25% savings, so if you need a new fridge, washer/dryer or other large appliance you could easily save a hundred bucks or so by buying this weekend.

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here and wonder why saving 8.25% off regular price is as good as paying the tax and waiting for a 15 or 20% off sale. Those sales may be easy to come by as we get closer to the holidays.

Know your prices, watch the sales, don't believe all the hype.

I have a question too: Why not DISHWASHERS??? I have searched and searched and I suspect that by their conspicuous omission they are not included. Could you just write, "Dishwashers are not eligible" and spare me this huge research project? Our POS crappy one and one half year old Frigidaire dishwasher has been giving us trouble lately. We wasted $65 on a service call which gave us a $200 estimate to replace a fan, which I am now 99% sure is not the entire problem as the switches up front seem to be going bad. No way I am investing more money in this piece of junk. I am so pissed! (can you tell?) Yes our home warranty was allowed to expire and yes we even had an offer to extend the warranty on this thing a few months back which my wife did not act upon. One year is not a sufficient factory warranty for these appliances. In the old days you didn't really worry about it because they lasted forever. Now they are engineered to last 12 months and 1 day, so you better buy an expensive extended warranty or you are screwed.

So, no tax free dishwashers, huh?

If you buy from Sears they will match there lowest price 30 days out. So you can purchase tax free this weekend, then have any additional savings over the next 30 days (which includes Black Friday).

In April when I purchased my Friday it was initially only 10% off at Sears, went back when it was 20% plus an additional 5% family and friends within the 30 day window.

Knowing corporate policies and loop holes is often more beneficial.

Just checked the Sears site and the 20% standard discount is being offered now, plus 5% for using their credit card, plus saving the 8.25% on the sales tax that they'd tact on...if you really want to hold for a better deal then best of luck to you. But these savings applied to a sales price of 1000 item (1082.50 w/ tax) would cost 750 just about 30% off what you'd pay at full price. Cost with 25% discount without the tax free would be 811.88...
