Hello to all,

We are relocating due to my husbands job come Jan/Feb of 2009. We are a young couple with a 18 month old son and 2 dogs.

I need help finding a nice family oriented neighborhood. We are open to houses as well as apartments (maybe gated communities). A place that is safe and close to good schools for my son and myself as I am a teacher. I would also like a place that is close to activities for young children (parks, zoo, pool, etc.). Oh, and if anyone has any information on a good daycare I can look into would be great .

My husbands new job will be located by the Charlotte International Airport.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to some replies.

Thank you!

When working at the airport many people find it most convenient to live in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte or the towns of Belmont, Mt. Holly or Fort Mill

Good suggestions above -- a lot will depend on what you want to spend as well. South Charlotte/Ballantyne area may work as well. Let us know price point and we can make more specific suggestions for you.

I recommend Belmont. Great schools, nice, safe, lower taxes, very close to the airport in Charlotte. I would stay away from CMS - that goes for teaching there as well as sending your son when he starts school if you are still living there.

Thanks guys! I'm going to look into those suggestions.

Is the Belmont area close to downtown in case we want to go out. Movie theater's, restaurants, kid activities? As much info as any of you can supply us with is appreciated. We will be going to see a few places in 2 months and just want to have a perspective list.

As for prices, we were looking into renting at least for the 1st year until we decide were to live. Taking some of the advice posted here :0)

Default Belmont

Nabmom, I live and work in Belmont so I am more than happy to answer your questions.
Belmont is about 10/15 minutes away from the airport and 20 minutes to uptown Charlotte. The closest movie theather is in Gastonia which is about 10 minutes away, but I prefer to drive a little longer to a newer..nicer theather. Arysley or Northlake Mall are the ones that we frequest.
There are several resteraunt's here in Belmont, and of course many more in Gastonia or Charlotte. In Belmont we have our own downtown that has a couple restaraunts (Sammy's, Old Stone, Holy Angles ) and a park that many children enjoy playing at. Check out the web site for Belmont's park and rec and you will see some of the activities that are geared to children Belmont Parks and Recreation Dept..
Depending on what age your children are... sports are big here too.
Belmont does not have a ton of rental housing, but there is always something available. If you have any other questions don't hesititate to ask.

Patti

Patti thanks for the info. this will really help me out before we go look. My son is 18 months old, but he is very actice and since we live in Fl we are used to always doing something with him on the weekend. Also, do you know of any good daycares in that area that I can look into. Thanks for your help.

Default Daycare

No problem. We too moved here from Florida with a 14 month old at the time. So I can understand some of what you are about to embark on.

Daycares in the area. My first choice is the First Presbyterian Weekday School. We loved this school. There is also a new daycare called Newbridge Childrens Acadamy. This daycare just opened and is very popular as they offer Kindermusik and playspanish. I know that both schools have waiting lists. You can also check into first united methodist dayschool or childcare network.

Mountain Island Lake, Denver, Lincolnton. They are not too far from Charlotte and close to 485 and there are lots of family oriented activities over that way.

Check out Berewick in the Steele Creek area, Berewick and BerewickHOA.com. They are building a new elementary school that is to open in August and have activities for kids and families. Daycares in the area include Tutor Time (at South Tryon & Erwin), Lollipop and the Steele Creek Presb Church.
