Where to party on the weekends (or even during the week)?

I've been here 10 months and my perception of Charlotte's social scene is as follows:

-Top 40
-Ed Hardy
-Minimal techno
-Confederate Flags
-"Becky's"
-"Chad's"
-Banker after-hours

Where do people with some flavor get down? Talking hip hop, r&b, reggae, soca non-top 40 type of vibes. Also not a spot with everyone trying to be a "local" celebrity. Just real people, real music, etc.

Also some spots where people that don't show up for a night out like they got dressed in the dark, i.e., like they stepped out of that god awful clothing store in South Park mall that has all the shirts on it with the mythical birds and dark crosses and True Religion jeans, etc.

I can't stay home any longer and I'm not looking to get married either so thanks in advance and HELP.

-CS

Seriously, I cant help but think that you'd have much more success if you specifically asked for what you want, rather then prefacing it with an editorial. Seems there is an anti-Yankee sentiment in this area, and this is exactly the reason why!

Not much into clubbing anymore, I prefer the "local bar" type establishments.

I agree, telling us what you *DO* want, rather than what you *DON'T* want would be a little more productive.

What about that new bar in the Epicentre, "Blue" or something like that? There's got to be some dance clubs up in the University area, no?

I did mention what I was looking for right here

perhaps you got stuck up on my mocking of Ed Hardy...

Well, that would imply that only hip hop/R&B/reggae/soca are what you consider "real music".

Also, I have no idea what you mean by "people with some flavor".

I would agree that there is apparently a lack of dance clubs in uptown. Hence my suggestion for the University area.

If you get more specific, we might be able to give you some more focused answers...

Hey, I didn't understand half of the original post, and I am just an old stay at home married fuddyduddy.. (well, sometimes we go out for a pizza) but I think the rude replies are uncalled for.

........ ok re-read the OP... not quite sure..

Not that I am a fan but I do know that the Forum has good techno DJ's from all over the country that consistently "spin" or "play" or whatever they do there.

Silly question possibly but what are Beckys and Chads?

I go out every weekend and a couple of nights a week and I am not seeing any confederate flags. I have to wonder where the heck you are going...

Someone started a thread on Soca and I would check that out..

Have you tried Crush on Stonewall? That's a hip hop club. I can't give any personal opinions on it but I hear about it here and there.

I agree, clubs I-77 north and I-95 are good recommendations. Don't go to Boston, I say two confederate flags on porches in Winthrop and South Boston.. God bless them.

Ok, I will help you to the best of my one year ability. So far Cub Tempo is the best for me. I've been to many others you could PM and I will give you my feedback. If you looking for Soca, Charlotte so far is limited. There is a reggae club on the Plaza, called Club Crystal. It's small, but you will have fun and dance until the wee hours--definitely an after party once you leave another club. Savoy is as ghetto as heck, been twice and had to avoid two fights. Excelsior good for the grown folks on Saturday-this is Charlotte's oldest place. However, it has more of a lounge feel than club. I still had a good time and the fish was tasty--many steppers dance here.

Knowing your age would help more with suggestions.
