To me it makes sense to turn off the pilot in the warm months. We have a gas fireplace insert and it does a teriffic job keeping the house warm in the winter. Much cheaper than running the electric heat pumps. Especially this winter when the temp. drops below 35 degrees. Heat pumps are not very efficient at those low temperatures.

I am really glad to have read all of these replies. My pilot light has always been cut off after using. I really don't use my fireplace very much. This winter I will.

I have been told by my fireplace insert supplier that gas is corrosive and has moisture so it is best to keep it moving through the line so it does not corrode the valves. A pilot light accomplishes this.
