social work jobs near charlotte
hey all...
i am very interested in moving to huntersville. i am relocating from nj and will be completing my msw (social work) degree in december. however, i am struggling in my job search for msw positions near huntersville. are there any other areas besides charlotte that have a great need for social workers? i would prefer to work within mental health (agencies, hospitals or nursing homes).
any info would be much appreciated, thanks!

NASW posts vacancies on their web site. Also check the state hospital in, I think, Broughten. And there's the VA in Salisbury.

PLEASE read the other posts concerning relocating to Charlotte and the job market here. It is bad. I have a friend who does social work who has not been employed in 6 months or more.

UNC Charlotte has a large social work program. Check their website for job ideas and places that are hiring.
I agree with previous poster, job market is very hard in Charlotte. Do not move down here unless you have a job first.

If UNC Clt has a program, you are going to be mostly out of luck. They have to place practicum students and their graduates are also looking for jobs. HAving practicum students keeps down the salary and hiring rate b/c places can get students for much cheaper than you!

check out social work jobs in Lincoln county, Cleveland county and Gaston county. These counties are a 15-60 min commute from Huntersville and Charlotte.
Another good tip: The local Mental Health Entities (LME's) endorse providers of various services in these areas. Go to there websites and get a listing of providers in these counties and explore jobs they have, as well as jobs posted for the LME's....they are Piedmont and Pathways.....

Don't limit yourself to traditional lines of social work. There are positions in nursing homes, hospitals, and public schools. I am pro public school because they offer services that are vital. Plus, you would have a teacher calander with christmas holidays off. Good luck

SW job
Try the hospitals, Carolinas Medical Center, Novant Health (Presbyterian in Charlotte, Rowan Regional in Salisbury), try the outpatient clinics, Daymark Recovery Services, Northeast Psych, try Eastover Psych in Charlotte. Try Monarch Behavioral Health, try Mecklenburg county school, Cabarrus county schools, Iredell county schools, Lincoln county schools. Jobs are scarce but are around. The VA in Salisbury is lucrative but SLOW. Good luck! ~former NY'r, MSW, LCSW, LCAS-P!
