*April Verch Band Concert*
The Great Aunt Stella Center - Fri., Nov. 21st, 8pm

The Charlotte Folk Society is presenting the April Verch Band in their Queen City debut concert. This band has established a reputation as consummate performers in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and Europe, winning over audiences with sheer virtuosity, charm, humor, and boundless energy on stage. April Verch combines the talents of Natalie MacMaster and Alison Krauss - all in one person. This young woman from Ontario's Ottawa Valley captured both the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and Canadian Open Fiddle Champion titles when barely in her twenties. She is a stepdancing champion who performed with the Pilatzke brothers (now touring with Irish music legends, The Chieftains) as a member of the Dueling Dancers, a troupe that earned national attention for its blend of innovative and traditional Ottawa Valley stepdancing. As well as fiddling, dancing and composing, April is a vocalist whose voice has been hailed as "absolutely captivating" by the Toronto Star. April's 2008 release, her seventh album, "Steal the Blue," was recorded in Nashville, and was co-produced by Stephen Mougin (Sam Bush Band) and Jon Weisberger. Visit Charlotte Folk Society to watch from a selection of 15 of her videos. "This concert is undoubtedly November's best entertainment value." - Wanda Hubicki, Charlotte Folk Society
The Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Ave., Charlotte, NC
Advance tickets: $15 adults; $10 ages 15 & younger; buy online at Charlotte Folk Society. At the door: $17 adults; $12 ages 15 & younger.

Yes, yes, yes -- a thousand times YES. Over The Rhine is just plain brilliant. I've seen them many times and loved it every single time.

Here's a link to their website. Check 'em out. If you click on the Record Player thingie you can listen to their latest album.

Or, if you prefer, here's their myspace.

Last, but not least, here is a mention of them in Friday's Observer. But I do want to take issue with something that was written in the article.
Quote:
9 Over the Rhine
7:30 p.m. Sunday, Visulite Theatre ($18)
On the Ohio married couple's latest, “The Trumpet Child,” singer Karin Bergquist glides through tracks as if she's on a jazz-club stage over half a century ago, smoking a lit slim cigarette in an evening gown while husband Linford Detweiler provides the torchy Americana backdrop. 704-358-9200.
That was very poorly worded sentence. It almost makes it sound like Karin is actually smoking a cigarette on stage. She is not. Never does. I have no idea if she smokes - I doubt it -- but she never does on stage, and the person who wrote that blurb reeeaaaalllly needs to work on sentence structure.

Anyway, go. You'll love it.

Seriously....although, as someone who pays close attention to musical goings-on, I'm still surprised at how often Charlotte gets bypassed by a lot of national touring acts who often will play multiple venues that are within two hours of Charlotte, but not here in town.

I'm even more surprised that Vertical Horizon is still playing gigs.
