I had a coworker, who was fairly educated (an ER nurse), who told her child that New England was a state. When she realized it wasnt, she had a friend or relative (I swear this is true) make up tourism literature for the state of "New England". Now, while we all laughed about it later, I was more than a little dismayed! If that can happen, I have no doubt that people could miss pointing out America on an American map.
This reminds me of something DH & his partner used to do on slow nights at Grand Central while on post. They would ask people to name 5 states. Some wre able to actually name 5 states, but, they would get "upstate" for an answer alot of times. When they asked one guy about "upstate" he answered, "You know...upstate. You always see signs for it on the Deegan & the Thruway, but you never get there....upstate.". I kid you not!
Location: Some got six month some got one solid. But me and my buddies all got lifetime here

Actually, I am not at all surprised about that! I was born and raised "upstate", and always believed no one south of Peekskill knew we existed anyway! Kinda the way the political representation worked too...
