WEDDINGTON, N.C. -- Town Council members agreed Monday night to a residential building moratorium of up to 18 months as Weddington and nearby municipalities in Union County create a transportation plan and work to relieve congestion.

It's about time! Union County needs better roads desperately! NC in general, seems to be a day late and a dollar short when it comes to thinking about new roads. The commissioners (who are developers in disguise) and housing interests will scream bloody murder, but how many more new developments on Providence Rd will it take, to turn it into a parking lot? We need wider roads that can handle anticipated growth, not just a fix that will address the current amount of traffic we have. Build roads for the future, not for the present or past. It's not 1950 in Union County anymore!

It's actually a bit more complicated than you make it sound. Providence Rd is a STATE maintained road, just like many other of our local roads. We (and our local officials) do not get to build what we want to build just because you and everybody else moved here in such large numbers and now the roads are crowded. Believe me, you think you dislike the road congestion??? Your annoyance is nothing compared to the natives and longtimers here.

HEE HEE. What Loves said! Can you only imagine how we natives feel. The problems have occurred b/c of the influx of transplants - and then the transplants are very vocal about their annoyance w/ our roads and traffic problems . . . Not meaning to offend anyone on this forum! And not meaning this as a derogatory statement to anyone in particular! Just stating what is obvious to longtime residents.
Lets correct one thing first, this is issue is NOT the transplants fault, it direct goes to each town/county that APPROVED all these new subdivisions. If there were no homes or land available, then people wouldn't have moved here in droves.
Each town did not have the foresight (whether intended or not) 3, 4, 5 years ago to deal w/these issues...they approved all these subdivisions w/o worrying about the future....now the chickens have come home to roost.
Indian Trail has had the same thing since '05 and they are still building houses.
Please don't think that this means that all construction in Weddington will come to a grinding halt, because it does not mean that.
I believe it means all NEW construction that hasn't been approved already (maybe someone can explain better)
