HELP my friend is in need of Employment who isn't???
Here's another employment thread! But here's my story:
I just moved out here from NY 11 months ago. I took a job in Charlotte for $14 it was a temp. position so that my husband could transition his job over from NY. I live in Statesville so the 45 min. wasn't a problem.
Well, my friend just moved out here 2 months ago too from NY and has been applying for every office position she could online and has gone to every temp. agency in Statesville and placed her resume. She has not found a job.
I've tried rewording her resume around seeing if that would help. I don't understand what the problem is when she has over 20 plus years of experience.
Anyways is there something that we are overlooking? She's living in Statesville too and her lease is up in Feb. 09. She's willing to work in Huntersville, Mooresville, Davidson, even Hickory.
What can we do? Should she go to all temp. agencies she could find?
Submit your ideas PLEASE!!!

My guess is that it is a "timing" issue for now. It has been my experience that companies slow down the hiring toward the end of the year and then new budgets come into play the first of the year. Keep on applying and expect to hear something near the end of December.

Unfortunately, as you probably noticed from the other threads on here, that is a common occurrence right now - there are just way more people - a lot of them highly qualified - than there are openings right now. And yes, your friend should be working with every employment agency she can, no one agency has all the open postings in the area.

Yeah the job market pretty much everywhere sucks right now truthfully. I've been here 4 months from GA but have been able to find work through temp agencies and will start with AT&T in January.
But Convergys, Sprint and AT&T are hiring so you can suggest your friend apply there..other than that all retail is hiring for the holidays.

My friend has been out of work for over 6 months in an industry she has almost 20 years experience making VERY good money. She just accepted a job making $8 an hour because that is all she was able to get. Times are really hard now. Good luck to your friend.

Longtime residents, w/ good networking and friends who would give them a job b/c they know their work ethic, are out of work here. People w/ great resumes and connections! This is why we keep saying - DO NOT MOVE HERE WITHOUT A JOB. Even college kids can't get the typical jobs in retail and fast food b/c mature adults w/ families are taking those low wage jobs trying to feed their families.
The problem is - there simply are no job openings out there w/o a stack of applicants to fill each one.
We have known quite a few people who have lost their administrative type jobs b/c companies are simply cutting those positions - permanently. Even Execs are now expected to set their own appointments, create their own documents and presentations, book their own travel plans. We are seeing this across the country. They are handing Execs Blackberries and saying - take care of your clients (departments) yourself w/o administrative assistance. With a computer and inhouse calendars and scheduling systems - that is how things have been moving for a decade. The administrative jobs are drying up.

Jobs are hard to find. Most companies are in a freeze and don't want to hire. Even temp agencies are having a rough time placing a few candidates. People please, don't move to Charlotte without a job! Times are rough, and the end of the year slow down doesn't help either. I tried at least 10 temp. agencies before I was able to land a contractor job. They pay is not bad, but it is still a third less compared to what I was making before in FL. Good luck.

Well, Ani, this is not good news for me (although I am not surprised). I am looking to re-enter the full-time work force and all my experience has been as an executive assistant. So, where would you send us seasoned executive assistants in our quest for marketing our skills? Do you think all these newly administrative-less executives would be interested in farming out their work to a work-from-home admin? This is an idea I have toyed with in the past. Anyone else doing this? Feedback, please...

Try getting on as Holiday help in the retail sector. It isn't great but its a job and some of those people stay over. This market just sucks. I was kind of holding out hope until I read the news today, I am not cutting way back on my expense.. getting a little nervous.

There is a company called Virtual Assistant that a friend of mine works for - I'm not too sure about the details but I'll see if I can find it and get it to you - it's rather along those lines of "Remote Assistant" I believe.
