Just a reminder, since not many of us have been in cold weather for a while we could put some helpful hints here for others.

1. Don't forget to detach your hoses from the house so that the water does not freeze up back into your house and break a water line.

2. Check your filters/piping for furnances, fireplaces and such.

Check your windows. If you have a lot of air coming in, put up plastic barriers or if the air is coming in around the sills, you should check to see if you need to add caulking.

Get your chimney checked by a professional chimney sweep if it has been a while since you had it checked/cleaned.

Once the leaves are off the trees, it is a good thing to clean out your gutters, especially if you have large trees nearby.

Get your furnace serviced if you haven't already.

Change filters in your house at least once a month. Amazing how nasty indoor air gets when things are closed up in the winter.

Make sure you turn all clay potter upside down or put it in a sheltered area, as freezing water can crack and break flower pots.

Get some kitty litter to spread on steps in case we have an ice storm.

I take the easy way out. Peppermint schnapps. Get the unit doses. Keep in your pocket. Smells like you have been eating peppermint candy. Neighbors will have no clue as to why you are so happy while raking the leaves.

Hee Hee. Heck no. The neighbors think I have such a great attitude about working outside in the cold. They probably would give me the Good Citizen award. I am so happy while I work . . .

Wow, this whole thread just turned my crappy day into laughter...Practical tips AND humor, all rolled into one.

One reason I love this board.

(And my only cold weather tip is to check the air pressure in your tires to make sure you're not running too low...sometimes you need to add air if it's very cold outside for an extended time.)

Ani...

kitty litter? for the steps?? Probably won't do anything except make you dirtier when you falll..

Rock salt is what you need...or, some of that new chemical that they have out now that doesn't hurt your grass OR your concrete. (you can get it at Lowe's)
