Default University Area

Does anyone know anything about the University area of Charlotte. How's the price of housing? How are the schools? Any information would be great. I'm moving from New York City and I'm looking into different areas.

Is there anything in specific you are looking for? I have lived in the area for 20 years and know it pretty well.

I'm moving to the Charlotte (University area) and I would like to know the ratings of the middle school and the high school? Is there a trade school in the area that's real good for general capentry like plumbing..electrical...etc.?

Love the NE Charlote area. go to Greatschools.net for info on the school system. At least I believe that's the site. A google search will help you out. Trade schools - can't help you there

My wife and I just bought in the University City area in March. We love it...pretty much every store or restaurant you need/want, convenient access to 85 and 77--as well as plenty of back roads to get down town, and the housing is very affordable. We bought 2300 s.f. on a 1/2 acre lot for $180k. We don't have kids, so I can't help you out with the school recommendation.

Schools.....Our boys went to Mallard Creek Elementary (no trailers then), very pleased with the school, except the last 2 years our younger one was there. Middle School they went to Alexander.....again the last 2 years for our younger one, were not good. The reason is that both times, the school got new principals, not happy with either of the principals, the elementary school principal is leaving, not sure about the middle school one. The middle school was very overcrowded, a new middle school (Ridge Rd) is opening, I think this school year (08-09), maybe that will help. Brand new HS, Mallard Creek, have had a few problems with teachers, but great staff, administration. I'm glad we are there, although, we didn't have any problems with our old HS, Vance. This area is growing really fast, we love it. If your use to the fast pace of the city, this is (Charlotte area) is your kind of place. The beltway, when completed will be great for the housing market. We moved here from Northern Virginia 10 years ago, best thing we ever did. Didn't know a soul down here, but glad we made the move. There are so many housing options, anywhere from $150,000-$500,000. You can go to the school districts web page to get information about schools Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Very diverse area also.

The University area is nice, but you can drive 5 minutes more and be in Cabarrus County where the taxes are lower and the schools are better. I have lived in the Harrisburg area of southern Cabarrus and the University area for 43 years. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the area.
