Every so often I am reminded that many newcomers do not know the history of our area lakes. Rather than hijack HomeSweetHomeNY's thread, I decided to create a new one.

Information for new or potential newcomers

Duke Energy Lakes

Quote:
Duke Energy created lakes as a source of electric power production, but we also reserved land for public access. Many of these access areas are operated in partnership with state, recreation, and law enforcement agencies in the Carolinas. Please become familiar with water safety rules and pay attention to warnings and signals around power plants.
Lake Norman Facts - Cowans Ford Dam created the largest manmade body of fresh water in North Carolina when it dammed the Catawba River in 1963.

Lake Wylie Facts - Lake Wylie was named after Dr. W. Gil Wylie, who organized the Catawba Power Company, a predecessor of Duke Energy. It is the oldest lake on the Catawba River. The lake was first created in 1904 by a dam near Fort Mill, South Carolina.
