I know someone who travels to NoVa(fairfax) on weekends from Raleigh. It takes around 5 hrs or less.
The important thing is not to be near DC during rush hour and they have a very long rush hour!

This is helpful and really great everyone! I won't be doing it often, but often enough. I will also need to go to Atlanta - which I hear isn't bad either,
Just came back from a trip to Vienna VA. Left my house in Charlotte at 3:10pm and walked in the door in Vienna VA at 8:15. Took 85 to 95 and had no traffic or accidents.
Coming home there was an accident on 95 just south of Richmond which backed up for about some time. Did the tourist thing on Sunday in Washington, lunch at the Spy Museum, got on the road about 4:00pm and walked into my door at 10:20.
The roads around VA were very nice. No construction!
The trip to Atlanta can be anywhere from 3.5 hours to 4.5 hours depending on time of day.
