...possible 'cons' of Huntersville/Davidson & even Concord areas?

I was so excited to find the Huntersville & Davidson area (north of Charlotte) for our pending relocation later this year UNTIL I discovered there are both nuclear & coal power plants cooling into Lake Norman. The McGuire Nuclear Station is at the southern point of the lake & it's 10-mile evacuation route extends pretty much fully across Huntersville, Cornelius & Davidson to the east (http://www.denvernc.com/mcguirezonemap.htm) (broken link).

Then as if that weren't enough, according to the NC Public Protection Registry (www.ncregistry.ncsbi.gov (broken link)) there are a combined 1150+ registered sex offenders among the counties of Cabarrus (Concord/Kannapolis), Iredell (Mooresville/Davidson), Mecklenburg (Davidson/Cornelius/Huntersville/Char) & Rowan (Landis/China Grove); that number is skewed by including Mecklenburg Co (570+ offenders alone)-- the other counties average closer to 180-190 each.

I don't consider myself an alarmist, but these factors caught me totally off guard. Has anyone else dealt with them as potential deterrents?
If you already live in any of these areas, what is it really like? Do you feel safe? Are there seedy back-water areas within the areas that everyone tries to avoid (not talking about Charlotte-metro here, but more the outskirts)? Are sirens constantly blaring from the power plants?

Thanks to any/everyone who can help talk me off this fence.
Best-
TeaLeaf

I check those things, but, those people are everywhere. I check them for the area I live in now, I see patients that come into my office on there, but I cannot treat them any differently for it. I think this is why I keep my children so close to me. Some people think I am over protective, but I can't help it, its the mother in me. I know there were these kinds of people out there when I was a kid, but I was out playing in the woods and the creeks all the time, no worries. My parenting ways are waaaaaay different than those of my mothers. Not that hers were wrong, God rest her soul.

I agree, you can't hide from it. It's everywhere, whether sex offenders or nuclear power plants. I think you'd be surprised how many nuclear power plants are in the US from my environmental science class. For about every major body of water in the US, there's at least one...

As far as sex offenders, it seems like I read in one of my classes that kids are more apt to be abused by someone they know nowadays, rather than someone they don't... I'm more scared of the ones that I don't know than the ones I do! At least they're somewhat tracked and you can research who they are... I'm more afraid of the unknown when it comes to children!

There are a lot of birds here too. Bird flu is a huge possibility, especially up by the lake....

I think the only logical conclusion is that the power companies are following the offenders so they can monitor them closely.

Err...

I'd be more worried about the sex offenders than the power plants..

To be honest, are you ready to live a power FREE life???

And the nonsense about nuclear plants being an issue is Chernobyl type thinking. Our plants are so much safer.

For those who drag out the TMI accident...it was PROOF that the safety system worked, not failed. Liz

Isn't their a power plant around Lake Wylie also?

The sex offender thing doesn't concern me much either I think these types are everywhere and sometimes where you least expect it. Sadly we need to be on guard at all times no matter where we live.
