Do you have a store up that way? We have a good one here in S CLT right off Hwy 51 but I would think there would be others closer to you. I have messed w/ those colors for years and have found out the history behind some of the color names - but never heard the info on Whitall!!! Thank you so much for sharing it!
Ani, I think all of the Benjamin Moore Dealers here are hardware stores. Is the one in South Charlotte a Benjamin Moore paint dealer? I'll have to go there in 2 or 3 weeks to go to Trader Joe's. It wouldn't be a big deal to go to the Benjamin Moore store while I'm there.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the colors. Yes, finding the right shades will be the trick.

You're welcome about the Whitall information. Red Bank Battlefield Park AND James and Ann Whitall House - GLOUCESTER CO NJ HISTORY & GENEALOGY My best friend & her husband volunteer there.

Yes, it is a BM paint store and the guys in there are so helpful. DM me when you decide to head this way and if I can work it out, we could meet up there and drool over the colors together, HEE HEE.

OK, Thanks, Ani. That would be great.

Stratton blue is a green/grey, IMHO. Salisbury green for a medium tone . . . Webster green - olive-ish grey color . . .

For a dark tone - I like Caldwell green . . .

I honestly think you can find some colors in BM in the historic palette. I have been using their stuff since the 70s, when I was doing showrooms - and have used it exclusively ever since. (Well, got some ooops paint = Valspar - at Lowes for a guest bedroom, but you know what I mean).

ETA - also - check out Kennepunkport Green.
Ani, I think I came up with an acceptable mix if I go with greens, Guilford green for the house, Caldwell green for the shutters, and Van Buren brown for the door.

Of course this is still relying on the computer, but based on your experience, would that work? Guilford green is nearly identical to the lighter green in the F&H pallette. That makes sense since the Guilford County Quakers (including my Mendenhalls) came down, primarily, from PA. The Caldwells were a Philadelphia family & it looks close to the darker green that I'm used to. I'm not set on the brown, but it looks like it works.

We are planning to paint the exterior of our house soon as well.

We were a bit stumped with colors, we had a "vision" of what we wanted, but it was hard to pick from tiny paint chips.

I cannot say enough about the guys down at Benjamin Moore in Waxhaw on Providence Rd. They were so helpful when I couldn't pick what color to paint 2 rooms of my house! The colors they suggested were perfect.

They listened to what we told them about our vision for the colors of the exterior and were great in suggesting colors that other customers liked and that had worked well together for trim and such.

You might go down and talk to them and get some help.

Dawn

Thanks, that's why I'm thinking that I'd rather go to a Benjamin Moore paint store than deal with them as a department in a hardware store.

Actually, I'm fine with paint chips, but haven't gone to get the collections yet. I know that 2 of the rooms will be getting Behr paint, in colors that I've used previously. I'm sort of open on the other rooms, but need to have a couple of directions figured out, just to satisfy the OCD side of me. All of the rooms & the exterior will be painted.

I like using the online ability to "paint" the rooms & houses, but the color on the monitor might not be true.

Default Check California Paints

Came across them when researching others like BM and SW. California has a very good reputation on various preservation sites online, and the historic palette is wonderful. The colors were developed with a preservation organization, Historic New England. The blues and greens are great: CALIFORNIA PAINTS - COLORS.

They also have a guide to various periods (Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, etc.) broken down into various periods: CALIFORNIA PAINTS - COLORS

They also sell small pots (about the size of a large can of tuna) so that you can try out the combos with real paint and see if they work. Eastway Paint Center (Eastway & Central) and Matthews Paint Center (down Independence) carries the brand.

Please report back and let us know what you choose & how it goes with the paint -- that's an upcoming project for us as well.

Thanks. I had never heard of them. I might want to look at them for some interior paint. For exterior paint, I'm probably going to go with more of a Mid-Atlantic pallette (Philadelphia/Williamsburg). Even though the house itself is not historic, I want the colors to be appropriate for the area.

There are some very nice colors in this company's historic pallette, but they are not Mid-Atlantic. I'm out in Cleveland County, & have definitely seen houses painted in that palette. If if was mid-summer & people were out in their yards, I'd have no problem to pull over & tell them I like the color & ask which company's paint it was. I can't see where anyone would be thrilled to have some crazy person knocking at their door, asking that.

I'll definitely post the results, when I'm finished.

I did this once and ended up with a ziploc bag full of paint! Interesting thought about mid-Atlantic vs. New England colors, something to consider.

A lot of the early settlers to inland NC came down from South & Central Jersey & southeastern PA. (including some of my own ancestors. Jamestown, NC is actually named for one of my ancestors.) There was a very strong tie. Ani said that Williamsburg colors predominate here. Williamsburg is Mid-Atlantic as is Philadelphia.

I really do like some of those colors that you posted. I really will consider them for interior colors. The only drawback is the distance. I'm in Kings Mountain, so I would need to use it in a room with minimal matching/coordinating. The house is a foreclosure & in rough shape & needs paint inside & out, so there's plenty of opportunity.
