NativeSon and Brian - looks like you all encouraged DH towards a good conclusion. We will see if it is solved - and if it isn't, we have Albert on backup tomorrow!!!!
Of course, I owe DH a back massage after he contorted himself under the sink. He is being quite the trooper. Let's see if he can put all this back together (without a leak, HEE HEE!!!)
If he managed to get it fixed, I expect you not only saved us some $$$, we won't have to wait til tomorrow.
I am putting Albert's name in my repair contacts book . . . cause ya never know what will happen down the road . . .
Usually bleach is sufficient to clean pipes if they are newer.... older ones might require a thorough snaking. I don't suggexst caustic chemicals especially if you know it's backed up but I use some for general upkeep but never for the actual clog.

I definitely would. Even if you're 100% sure you got everything I'd still toss something in there for insurance, whether it's bleach or a one time shot of drain cleaner. The other thing I would do, especially while you still have a call in for tomorrow, is run everything. Run a small load of laundry, run a dishwasher if you've got it, run your sink, run everything where the water flows around those pipes. I know it might seem like a bit of a waste of water, but I would say to test your system out by putting some stress on it. If you can run all of that this evening without a single backup, you should be golden.
Well, DH just announced that he has not solved the problem. So now he is going to go back and work on the laundry drain. SIGH.
And I agree, Brian - if we get this clog moved out, I am gonna run everything, b/c w/ Albert on call tomorrow, let's find out if we have a problem NOW - rather than over the holidays!!!!
You know all those socks that mysteriously disappear in the wash? Perhaps they're to blame for your blockage! Maybe they'll turn up in your garbage disposal!
I'm very sorry for your problems and I'm sorry I can't be of help. I just couldn't help but think about those darn orphaned socks while reading this thread.
Didn't read all the posts, so don't know if this was checked yet, but we had a similar problem---thought it was the washer, ended up with a brand new washer, and problem was still there. (lots of wasted money but we were too cheap to call a repair man) Turns out it was the Main Drain from the house, it was totally clogged, probably 60+yrs of goop. Replaced that and problem was fixed. I wonder if so much goop in the disposer just was the last straw for the drain, if that's the problem.

Ani, sorry I missed this while the problem was occuring. I've used baking soda washed down with cider vinegar which was later rinsed with a pot of boiling water dumped down the drain. It does work for some things.
I hope your hubby learned his lesson about the garbage disposal!!! I'm surprised he didn't stop dumping stuff into it after the first time especially when you own a home! (Not like an apartment where you just call someone up to fix it! hehe).
It's interesting learning about pipes and all that though when things like this happen. I hope it's all resolved!
