Charlotte's United Way spurs warning to nation - A Section | CharlotteObserver.com

Naughty naughty Ms. Pace King. And to think, people were giving this despicable person the benefit of the doubt and defended her. Well, what do they have to say now? Still want to defend her? What more does she need to do...kick the buggie over after taking the candy from the baby?

With the financial crisis this is the equivalent of arriving home to your cramped city apartment you cut your lights on and the roaches scatter....more to come soon.

So far we had Blago, Madoff, Stevens....etc. I would expect before it's all said and done almost all the industries in our infrastructure will have their own little scandal.

...and the sad part is that there will be those defending the roaches' life when they should be stomped on. That's my biggest beef. How are they (and others) to learn if nothing is done? I'm not saying literally squash people for their wrong doings, but where's the punishment...the public humility...the firings...the penalties...the fines...the civil lawsuits...SOMETHING?!?! They did wrong, multi-hundred page reports detail the wrong doings, and at the end of the day, they go home and rest easy in their $4 million mansion with a fire in the fireplace and classical music playing in the background.

Meanwhile, in this specific case, little Johnny and Suzie don't have basketballs to play with at the Boys and Girls Clubs...we all shake our heads in disgust about that, but is Ms. Pace King made to remedy that? No. A single year's salary and pension could go a long way at most REAL charities...

My worries are that the fraud when completely uncovered will be so rampant it will desensitize us past the point of no return and will become more and more rampant instead of less.

Yes and to think I donated to them through my work weekly.

I yanked the hand brake immediately when this crap was first reported. Called the payroll folks and said cease and desist!

You are correct..."society" has become jaded and numbed to these atrocities and will just turn a blind eye to it all. There'll be another bail out...there'll always be Chapter 11...there'll always be another multi-million dollar job for me to slide over to. Makes me sick...

All in all, its a shocking story. How do these people sleep at night?

Sadly, with stories like this, many people will think twice before donating to charities that help needy people. who wants to think that their well intentioned donations are going to awful and greedy people like Ms King?

I've always gone with the approach that my time is harder for some CEO to waste, so I contribute by volunteering for things like sorting food at the Food Bank, or cleaning out the garden at the homeless shelter.. even if the agency isn't using money properly at least I know that what I did was useful!!

I have stopped giving to the United Way and to the Red Cross, after the scandals with Bill Aramony (U. Way) and Joseph Lecowitch (R. Cross). You can google those two names and read the details.

The only charity I am contributing to now is the Salvation Army. At least they still have a good reputation. And it makes it easier to answer all those folks asking you for money: I just say "Sorry, I only give to the Salvation Army and let them distribute the money as they see fit."

Well, as you know, I got on that horse and was beating it as soon as I got a whiff of this situation.

What gets me is . . . the Board of the UW is made up of-supposedly- the "captains of industry" in this city!!! Every CEO who is anyone is on that board . . . plus reps from every large organization - wh includes accounting firms, Wachovia and BofA, the hospitals, etc. Look at the Board members who were at the helm! These are the leaders who had a fiduciary responsibility, as Board members, to oversee the management of UW!!! And they allowed this malfeasance to occur right under their noses! The executive committee had to approve Ms. King's salary and pension.

Shame, shame, shame!!!!

What concerns me is . . . if those are the people who are running our major corps in Charlotte, what the hell is going on in their OWN organizations????
