Again, a barking dogs may very well alleviate the whole situation. Not a pure breed (that they will want to steal), but, a big mutt with a very deep voice!

One would hope . . . but what worries me . . . these thugs are shooting dogs and they carry them off sometimes, too. I hate to say this b/c it makes me so sick to think about this . . . but the reason dogs get stolen is not only to sale them b/c they are purebred . . . some are stolen in this region as bait for dog fights. I can hardly even stand to write that . . . b/c it is so heinous a thought, someone's pet being used that way . . .

True, Ani, but, most thugs are afraid of dogs. Only if they are really desperate will they enter a house that has a dog. Remember, we don't have so many of the professional thugs here, just wannabees. They will shoot you rather than look at you, but, dogs terrify them. (overall)

Now, that is not a guarantee, but, neither is an alarm or a gun!

VERY good point and you are right - these are gangstas, not professional burglars. There IS a difference, as you so accurately pointed out. Dogs do terrify them, especially vicious sounding ones that are big enuff to bite and cause damage.

The other thing about a dog is . . . hard to sneak up on a homeowner or pull off a home invasion if the homeowner has a dog that starts barking the minute someone walks on the lawn. That gives the homeowner some warning, and even a burglar alarm doesn't do that. THey only go off after someone has entered (or attempted to enter) the actual premises.

My Sheperd/Boxer mix dog goes nuts if anyone walks by the house let alone come up the drive. He's not but 45lbs however he sounds like Cujo.....LOL

I always look out the window when he barks to see who's there and have on occasion stepped outside to address someone before they were half way up the drive. It stuns most people when you meet them outside like that.

He's bankrupt, his home was repossessed and the town and university had to shell out $3,000,000 a pop to each of the families involved). I'd like to see the same thing happen to Gilchrist, what a waste!

Cases where the burglar has successfully sued and won against a home invasion victim are actually few and far between. You hear more about the rare exception rather than the rule! I don't think there has ever been a case like that in this area in the last thirty years. Anyone who has heard of one in this area, please feel free to chime in! Any thug type that would have brains enough to file a suit, probably would not have the money to get the best attorney anyway. For the amount of money they pay prosecutors here, you're not going to get Robert Shapiro or F. Lee Bailey "prosecutor quality", so a decent lawyer could probably have the case dismissed!
ACLU and anti-gun groups will foot the legal bill and ACLU's coffer is bigger than CLT's.

I don't even look outside anymore when the dogs start to bark...they do it too often!! But, I know that the thugs in my neighbourhood are terrified of them, once one asked would my lab mix bite and I looked at him and said, "I don't know. want to find out?" HE RAN AWAY!

Nobody is coming near my house and I not know about it. Between the dogs barking, the cat mewing and the bird loudly chirping, there is a loud welcoming committee for everyone setting foot on my driveway.

The NC laws are a bit strange, IMO: if a thug is beating down your door, you can shoot him - through the door, even. But once he is inside your home, you can only shoot if you think he's going to kill or severely assault you. So if he's in your house and he has grabbed your stereo, you would not be justified in shooting him. The NRA instructors emphasized that, if you shoot and kill/wound the guy, the police *will* book you for homicide. They may let you go later, but be prepared to ride to the police station in the back of a police cruiser first.
See that is what I love about Texas, and it goes back to the horse theft days, if the perp is leaving your home with goods in tow (ie plasma, computer, stereo whatever) then you can clock them in the back with which ever weapon is closest to you at the time. Cops will show up, ask questions, then shake your hand for doing there job for them...

Just remember, if you are put in the position to defend your life, use the phrase "Breech of Peace" when the police show up. Tell them that you will be more than happy to assist them in any way possible, once you have spoken to an Attorney! Then sit down, and shut up...Not another word until your attorney is present...the police are there to gather information, that may be used against you...period...not that it would be there intent...

oh, and watch out for the civil suit that may come your way....Thugs gots family that are crooks as well..

I dunno. Breach of peace. A thug deliberately came onto your property to incite you? Eh. Don't think that would get you far as a defense in NC.
