If this were an easy question to answer, there would not be so many studies trying to address the issue in hopes of deciphering this statistic.

If you look at the poverty stats for this state, for ex., you will find that there are about the same number of black families in poverty as white families. However, more poverty-level white families live in rural areas, w/ the exception being black families living in poverty in a cluster of counties in the eastern part of this state.

So poverty alone is not the primary factor that spurs criminal activity. The most crime takes place in metro areas . . . and either in low economic areas or in burbs by criminals who live in low economic areas. So the conclusion seems to be - something occurs in those urban low economic communities that propels black males into criminal activity. When one examines the types of crime, the conclusion seems to be that much of it is drug related. I have not been able to find stats for this state that would indicate gang-related activity, but some studies suggest that gang activity is typically drug related.

I found that quite interesting. Also, more white folks commit arson.

I know most people I see on those Predator shows happen to be white people as well. I wonder why arson? I'd love to see the reasoning behind that.

Poison, arson, underage sex...we tend to be soooome bunch.

To understand why black males seem to be more susceptible to criminal activity when raised in poverty in an urban setting than when raised in poverty in a rural setting . . . one would have to define all the influencing factors that are or are not present by comparing rural vs. urban life.

What it tells me, as a parent, is that I would not want to raise my children in a poor section of an urban area. Period.

The thing is, I bet the majority of parents in those poor urban areas don't want to be there raising their kids either. Many of them just get stuck, inertia sets in along with hopelessness and the cycle is passed on to the next generation.

A lot of them don't, and I truly feel sorry for them, but a lot of parents just don't care.
